"I received contract advice on terms while negotiating an exit from a company. The communication by email and phone was quick and clear, and made the contract accessible and understandable. Cross-checking terms with other contracts was done, and the things I'd personally missed were highlighted for my consideration and impartial advice was offered. It was very easy to work with Mai and it was a great service from start to finish."

Today is World Preeclampsia Day.

Preeclampsia is a serious condition that can affect women during pregnancy, most often after 20 weeks, but sometimes shortly after birth. While it’s commonly linked to high blood pressure and protein in the urine, the symptoms aren’t always obvious and can easily be mistaken for typical pregnancy discomfort.

Raising awareness matters. Preeclampsia can develop quickly and, in some cases, have life-changing consequences for both mother and baby.

Understanding the signs and seeking advice early can make all the difference.

Best Consideration in Local Authority Land Disposals.

Under Section 123(2) of the Local Government Act 1972, authorities are required to secure the best consideration reasonably obtainable. In practice, that means making a balanced, defensible commercial judgment - not just focusing on headline value.

Case law supports a broad and pragmatic approach. Authorities can (and should) weigh factors such as price, deliverability, risk, and the credibility of a proposal. The key is ensuring that decisions are evidence-based, well-documented, and aligned with wider public law and procurement obligations.

Ultimately, “best consideration” isn’t a tick-box exercise. It’s a structured assessment of value in the round. Getting this right helps ensure decisions stand up to scrutiny while delivering outcomes that work in practice, not just on paper.

This article from the BBC reflects some of the challenges we are seeing in the Tribunal claims we deal with. Timetables to a final hearing are now stretching out and are increasingly measured in years rather than months. This is only likely to get worse when all of the reforms under the Employment Rights Act are brought into force.

This can pose huge problems for employers defending claims, particularly where witnesses move on or simply forget the details over time.

Of course, the ideal solution is to avoid facing a Tribunal claim in the first place but, for those employers fighting claims, there are steps that can be taken to minimise or even avoid the problems caused by such long delays. If you are defending a Tribunal claim, or trying to avoid facing one, and would like help from our specialist team of employment lawyers, do give us a call.

Employment tribunal service delays mean people bringing unfair dismissal claims are waiting up to five years in England and Wales.

Meningitis Outbreak - Concerns Over Delayed Reporting Following the Kent Outbreak

The recent BBC report on delays in reporting suspected meningitis cases during the Kent outbreak raises serious patient safety and legal concerns.

Meningitis is a fast-moving, potentially life-threatening condition where every moment matters. That is why meningitis B is legally classified as an urgent notifiable disease, requiring suspected cases to be reported immediately without waiting for lab confirmation.

According to the report, there was a two-day delay before the UK Health Security Agency was notified. During that time, vital opportunities may have been missed to trace close contacts, provide preventative treatment, and inform the public.

In serious cases like this, timely reporting is not just best practice but a legal and professional responsibility.

Can’t believe it’s been over a week since we celebrated Exeter Pride!

On Saturday 9 May, some of our team joined the march through the city and helped with litter picking throughout the day. It was such a lovely atmosphere to be part of, full of positivity, support, and community spirit.

Days like this are a great reminder of how important it is to celebrate individuality and create spaces where everyone feels welcome and included.

A big thank you to Exeter Pride for having us, we’re already looking forward to next year! 🌈
