Is the student pathway to PR still worth it? Yes — but be ready to compete. Canada tightened student intake because numbers outgrew what it could absorb, so the pathway is harder than it was three years ago. The advice hasn't changed: study here, aim for a PGWP (ideally three years so you can maximize it), use that time to demonstrate Canadian work experience, then go for Express Entry. And be strategic early — line up the most suitable job before your studies or PGWP wind down, not after. General info, not legal advice. Book: jcalaw.ca/book-appointment/

Open work permit valid for just one year, PR application still pending, permit about to expire — can you apply for a bridging open work permit? It depends. A BOWP is only available if your PR program has a provision for it and you meet its requirements — it's usually stated in the papers you receive whether you're eligible. Not all PR programs include bridging, so it's truly case-to-case. Check your documents and get advice on your specific program. General info, not legal advice. Book: jcalaw.ca/book-appointment/

Visiting Canada as a tourist and an employer is ready to sponsor you with an LMIA? It's possible — but under current rules you may need to LEAVE Canada first: converting from visitor to worker can mean exiting and waiting for the work permit abroad. This is a long-standing policy meant to control the number of foreign nationals in Canada while applications process. Get advice on your exact situation before making a move. General info, not legal advice. Book: jcalaw.ca/book-appointment/

Civic Holiday Notice

Heads up! On Monday, August 3, our office will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM for document pick-up only. No walk-in consultations will be accommodated.

It's not a holiday observed nationwide, but here in Ontario, we're taking it as a good excuse to slow down for a bit.

We'll be back to our regular schedule, 9am to 6pm on Tuesday, August 4.

Enjoy the long weekend, and take care of yourselves!
HAPPY CIVIC HOLIDAY! 🎉

Applying to restore your status in Canada? Restoration doesn't give you status right away — there's no "maintained status" for it, so you remain out of status while it's processed. Filing at day 80 isn't a red flag per se (the rule is within 90 days), but restoration is always discretionary: even a complete, on-time application is ultimately up to the officer. File as early and as complete as you can. General info, not legal advice. Book: jcalaw.ca/book-appointment/

A viewer asks: 67 and 73, both widowed, in love, together once a week — how does sponsorship work? Two paths: (1) Marry — once you have the marriage certificate you can generally apply as a married spouse, no one-year wait. (2) Common-law — you must live together continuously, marriage-like, for at least one year to qualify. "Once a week" is the catch: love isn't the legal test, cohabitation is. Inland spousal sponsorship pending — can you apply for an Open Work Permit before receiving your eligibility? Yes: if you have status and an Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR), you don't need to wait for eligibility. But if you're out of status, the requirement changes — you'll need eligibility (approval in principle) first. General info, not legal advice. Book: jcalaw.ca/book-appointment/

Waiting on a work permit application when your employer passes away? A closed work permit is tied to that one employer — so yes, you can (and should) look for a replacement employer right away, and the new employer can apply for an LMIA on your behalf. Remember: you're also obligated to inform IRCC of any material change to your pending application, including losing your employer. General info, not legal advice. Book: jcalaw.ca/book-appointment/

Lost your status in Canada? Within 90 days you can generally apply to restore it as a visitor — but restoration is discretionary. The officer weighs your reason to stay, and you cannot work while it's processed. Sometimes going home is the stronger move: it shows you can and will leave, while "I can't afford to go home" can raise refusal risk. If what you need to do in Canada isn't essential, consider going home first. General info, not legal advice. Book: jcalaw.ca/book-appointment/
