Nova Scotia is punishing women for being surrogates, and it needs to stop.

In Canada, surrogates are not legally paid. They are only reimbursed for legitimate pregnancy-related expenses. But in Nova Scotia, some women on income assistance are having those reimbursements treated as “income,” putting their benefits at risk.

This is not compensation. It is cost recovery.

Policies like this create fear, discourage potential surrogates, and make family building even harder for intended parents already facing long wait times.
