🚨 Major Changes to Family Open Work Permits in Canada! 🇨🇦

Starting January 21, 2025, new rules will apply to family members of international students and foreign workers:

✅ Who’s eligible?

- Spouses of international students in master’s programs (16+ months), doctoral programs, or select professional and eligible programs such as Doctor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Optometry, Pharmacy, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing Science, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Engineering.

- Spouses of foreign workers in TEER 0 or 1 jobs or specific TEER 2/3 roles in high-demand sectors (e.g., healthcare, construction, education).

❌ What’s changing?

- Dependent children will no longer qualify for Family Open Work Permits.

- Foreign workers must have at least 16 months left on their work permit for their spouse to apply.

🛑 Existing OWPs remain valid until expiration. Plan ahead and explore other permit options if needed!

3 Canadian provinces have entered into an agreement with IRCC to facilitate the issuance of 2-year open work permits for selected foreign worker in their provinces.

➡ Background:
✅IRCC has introduced a temporary public policy to facilitate open work permits for foreign workers placed in an expression of interest pool or a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

✅This public policy allows foreign workers currently employed in a province or territory who have signed a letter of intent with IRCC and who have been issued a support letter by a participating province or territory to apply for an open work permit that may be issued for up to 2 years.

✅The public policy requires that the province or territory sign a letter of intent with IRCC. This public policy expires on December 31, 2024.

1️⃣ Off-campus work hours - As of Nov 8, 2024, International students are allowed to up to 24 hours per week while their classes are in session.

2️⃣ Changing institute after coming to Canada - From now, internationals students must get a new study permit if they are changing their learning institute.
