The Supreme Court of Canada recently created a new civil tort: intimate partner violence.

For the first time, coercive and controlling behaviour in a relationship, not just physical or psychological harm, can be its own legal claim. The court laid out a 3-part test to determine when conduct crosses that line.

This changes how family law and abuse cases can be argued in Canada, and it's already shaping how lawyers approach coercive control claims.

Our own Carolyn Switzer, Project Manager – Legal Process Optimization, recently attended the BCLMA Conference, “Thriving in a New World,” held April 30–May 1 at the Vancouver Convention Centre in downtown Vancouver.

The conference explored how the legal industry is evolving, with a focus on adaptability, innovation, resilience, and well-being.

A key highlight for Carolyn was a moderated panel on integrating AI into the workplace, exploring practical tools and strategies for introducing AI within law firms, along with the ethical considerations and lessons from firms already putting these technologies to work.

At FH&P, we believe embracing innovation means understanding how new technology can empower our people, improve the way we work and help us better serve our clients.

Out of the Office. Into the Community.

Today, three of our lawyers traded their desks at FH&P for an incredible workspace at Accelerate Okanagan.

Bennett Liddycoat, Wendy Cheung and Jesse Langelier spent the day at AO’s Member Co-Working Day, offering free legal office hours to entrepreneurs and members of the Okanagan business community.

But it was about much more than legal advice.

It was about being present. Meeting people where they work. Hearing what local businesses are building, the challenges they’re facing and the questions that come up along the way. And, of course, getting to know more of the incredible people who make our community what it is.

The AO space was fantastic — creative, welcoming and full of energy. It was the perfect setting to step outside the traditional law firm environment and connect with the community in a completely different way.

A big thank you to the Accelerate Okanagan team for creating opportunities like this to work, connect and collaborate.

And thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with Bennett, Wendy and Jesse!
