Canada’s Interest Rate Outlook for 2026

As of January 2026, the Bank of Canada policy rate sits at 2.25%.

Most major banks expect an extended hold through 2026, especially in the first half of the year. A few anticipate modest hikes late in 2026 if economic conditions stay strong.

What’s driving the outlook:
• Rates are at the low end of the BoC’s neutral range
• U.S. trade uncertainty (CUSMA talks) is a key wildcard
• Inflation is near target, but wages and jobs remain resilient

Big picture:
Cuts are unlikely. Stability first — with a possible move higher toward the end of 2026.
