How is child support calculated in Ontario after separation?

September 30 is a day to remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, honour those who survived, and think of the families who carry this history.

At MFC Lawyers, we recognize that the legal profession has a particular responsibility to understand this history, including the role Canadian laws and institutions played in it.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 27 calls on the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to ensure lawyers receive appropriate cultural competency training. This includes education about residential schools, Indigenous law, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, and practical training in human rights and anti-racism.

Our commitment is specific: By October 31, 2026, MFC Lawyers will review our family law intake process and client communication practices to identify barriers Indigenous clients may face in accessing our services. We will focus on providing clear explanations of legal options, respecting each client’s family and community circumstances, and accommodating communication needs. We will also compile a reference list of Indigenous legal and community services to support appropriate referrals.

“My partner wants to separate. Do I have to decide everything right now?”

No. That conversation can feel overwhelming, but you can take the next steps one at a time.

1. Pause before signing anything. A proposed separation agreement may affect parenting, support and property. You can ask questions and get legal advice before agreeing to terms.

2. Gather the basics. Keep copies of financial records, note important dates, and write down any immediate questions about your children, home or expenses.
3. Get advice that fits your circumstances. In Ontario, the Family Law Act addresses property equalization for married spouses. Parenting time and decision-making responsibility are assessed with the child’s best interests in mind. If a divorce or family property dispute requires court proceedings, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice has locations in Milton and Guelph.
