As of January 1, 2026, employers in Ontario can no longer require Canadian experience in publicly advertised job postings.

For many newcomers, this has been one of the most frustrating barriers to entering the Canadian workforce. You needed Canadian experience to get hired, but you needed a job to gain Canadian experience.

That requirement is no longer allowed in Ontario job postings.

The changes go further. Employers must also disclose when artificial intelligence is used in hiring decisions. Workers licensed in another Canadian province may also be able to start working in Ontario within 10 business days while completing Ontario authorization.

These are meaningful changes for newcomers, skilled workers and employers.

If you are a newcomer who has been told you do not have enough Canadian experience, document it and know your rights.

If you are an employer, review your job postings and hiring process now. Language that used to be common may no longer be compliant.

If you are unsure how these changes affect your hiring strategy or your path as a newcomer, contact Ackah Law to discuss your options.

If you are a foreign worker living in Canada, a will may feel like something you can deal with later. However, later is not always promised.

When someone passes away in Canada without a Canadian will, their family can be left facing estate issues, immigration questions and painful uncertainty at the same time.

This becomes even more complicated when a spouse or child does not yet have Canadian permanent residence or citizenship. A family may be grieving while also trying to understand who has legal authority, what happens to Canadian assets and whether their status in Canada is still secure.

Most newcomers assume their home country documents will cover everything. In many cases, they will not.

If you live in Canada, even as a temporary resident, you should understand what happens to your assets, your family and your spouse or children’s immigration status if something happens to you.

These conversations are difficult, but they are much easier before there is a crisis.

If you are living in Canada with family, contact Ackah Law to discuss how your immigration status connects with your long-term planning.

Canada’s immigration rules are changing and many people are feeling the pressure.

For temporary residents, international workers, students and families waiting for permanent residence, every policy shift can feel deeply personal. A new rule can change your timeline. A missed requirement can change your options. A delayed decision can change your life plans.

But a change in policy does not mean your path is over.

It means you need to understand where you stand, what options are still available and what steps you can take before time runs out.

Immigration has always required patience, preparation and resilience. Right now, it also requires strategy.

If you are feeling uncertain about your future in Canada, contact Ackah Law to review your options and get clear on your next move.

Express Entry is changing and if you have a profile in the pool, this is the time to pay attention.

IRCC is proposing to merge the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades Program into one stream called the Federal High-Skilled Class.

For now, these are proposals. They are not law yet and the current Express Entry system is still running draws.

But the direction is important.

IRCC is looking more closely at candidates who are likely to have stronger economic outcomes in Canada. That could mean more focus on higher-earning occupations, wage levels compared to the Canadian median wage and changes to the CRS points people currently rely on.

Some points may also be reviewed, including spousal points, French language points and sibling points.

If your CRS score depends heavily on factors that may change, this is the time to understand your options before the new rules take effect.

Immigration strategy is always easier before the door starts moving.

If your future in Canada depends on Express Entry, now is the time to get clear on your next move. Contact Ackah Law to discuss your profile and PR options.

You worked hard to get your FIFA visa. Please do not risk your ability to come back to Canada because of one bad night.

Canada has rules around public alcohol, cannabis, disorderly conduct and public behaviour that visitors need to take seriously. You cannot assume that what feels minor in the moment will stay minor once it becomes part of a police record.

A charge for a bar fight, disorderly conduct or drug possession can follow you long after you leave Canada. It may affect a future Canadian visa, U.S. visa or border crossing. You do not always need a conviction for admissibility concerns to arise.

FIFA should be a time to celebrate, travel and enjoy the experience. But your visa only gets you here.

Your behaviour helps determine whether you can come back again.

Know the rules before you arrive and protect the future you worked hard to create.

A family lived in Canada for three and a half years.

They worked, built a life here and waited for their permanent residence application to move forward. Then their permit expired before the PR decision came through and they had to return to India.

This is the reality many temporary residents are facing right now.

Canada is deliberately reducing the number of temporary residents in the country, which means permits are not being extended as easily as many people expected. At the same time, permanent residence pathways are competitive and many people are still waiting for clarity.

The most important thing is not to wait until your status is about to expire to explore every option.

When you know your options early, you have more room to make the right decision for your future in Canada.

If your permit is expiring and you are not sure what comes next, this is exactly the kind of situation where legal guidance can help.

Processing time said 10 weeks. Approval came in two.

A business owner came to us needing a C11 Entrepreneur Significant Benefit Work Permit with a real deadline and a real reason to be in Canada.

Instead of submitting the application and hoping the timeline worked in their favour, we built the file to answer the officer’s questions before they had to ask.

For C11 applications, IRCC is looking beyond whether someone owns a business. They want to understand whether the business is real, viable, beneficial to Canada and whether that person is essential to the operation.

That is why strategy matters. We supported the application with a clear business case, revenue evidence, job creation plans, competitive analysis and documentation that showed this was a serious operation.

Two weeks later, the approval came through.

If you are an entrepreneur exploring a move to Canada, your application needs to tell a clear business story. The stronger that story is from the beginning, the easier it is for IRCC to understand why your presence matters.

The TR to PR update is finally here, but it is not a new application pathway.

The government confirmed that 33,000 temporary workers will receive permanent residence through this initiative, with 20,000 expected this year and the rest in 2027.

But IRCC is selecting from existing applications.

That means you cannot apply for this today. To benefit, you must already be in the system through a qualifying program, such as a Provincial Nominee Program, Atlantic Immigration Program, community immigration pilot, caregiver pilot or agri-food pilot.

You must also be living outside a major city. Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and MontrΓ©al are excluded.

I know this is disappointing for many people who were hoping for a new TR to PR pathway.

If this does not apply to you, Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs remain the most reliable PR options right now.

If you are unsure where you stand, book a consultation so we can help you understand your path forward.

From May 2 to May 8, our team received approvals for Work Permit, L-1B, TN and PR Card matters.

It is always meaningful to see files move forward, especially when clients have been waiting and planning around these decisions.

For some, it means more stability at work.

For others, it means less uncertainty for their family or business.

Immigration can feel like a lot when so much depends on timing, paperwork and the right next step.

So when approvals come in, we do take a moment to appreciate them.

Congratulations to our clients, and thank you to the Ackah Law team for the care behind each file.
