Curium Legal

Curium Legal Lawyer for businesses, big and small Why did I start Curium Legal? Most lawyers have only ever been lawyers and frankly, it shows!

I had a growing frustration over 12 years in the industry of lawyers talking a different language to the businesses they work with and charging based on hourly rates which surely were invented by someone super lazy who wanted to be a millionaire. I wanted to be able to do thing differently depending on whether you’re a small startup or an established business, because they have totally different n

eeds! I was really lucky to have my first baby right before Covid put Victoria into lockdown and while I was realising that traditional law firms weren’t for me any longer, everyone else was realising that flexible, home based work is perfectly effective. My business is run flexibly which allows me to be a present Mum and a productive lawyer without compromising either role. My vision is to design my legal services specifically to suit the businesses I’m working with and where they are on their business journey. I believe you should know what the price is and what you’re getting, just like you would buying a mattress or a lipstick (coincidentally as a mum of 2 little ones, 2 things I would like to spend much more time with!). There is no secrecy here, make a buying decision as an empowered consumer and feel confident that you’re not being ripped off. Not only do I have the experience and training (legal and business) to understand large businesses and what they need, but as a small business owner myself, I understand how this translates to the small business setting and the unique challenges in managing risk within limited budgets. About last night… We’re still beaming 😁

The Professional Services category is a big one and we can’t believe we walked away winners amongst a fab field of finalists.

We work with so many excellent businesses that it is kinda our responsibility to create an excellent one of our own to keep up. Inspiration is pretty easy to find amongst our amazing clients.

It’s a hard job sometimes but an absolutely joyful one overall and we’re so grateful for the trust and confidence our clients place in us.

So the main thanks today goes to our clients for supporting us. You’re the reason we have a business and we’re infinitely thankful 🙏🏼

Our staff aren’t bad either but we’ll save that shout out for the next post!

A new workplace hazard has entered the chat, and you'll need to make sure your business is in the know. "AI Brain Fry" or "AI Burnout" is driving up numbers for psychosocial injury claims, with employees claiming they're mentally worn down from constantly supervising and verifying AI outputs.

One worker described it as "a dozen browser tabs open in my head, all fighting for attention."

If your organisation is rolling out AI tools, psychosocial risk assessment should be part of the rollout plan, not an afterthought.

It is estimated these claims are already costing Australian employers more than $1 billion every financial year and increasing by 10% year on year, while physical injury claims are on the decline.

Talk to us today if you need help navigating these interesting times for your business - and put a plan in place to protect your employees and your business.

Is your business ready for September? The new Victorian WFH laws are on the way, and they will flip how flexible work requests must be handled. From 1 September, most employees whose roles can reasonably be done remotely won't just get to request WFH, they'll have a legal right to it, up to 2 days a week.

The default shifts from "let's negotiate" to "unless you have a compelling reason why not." And there's a bill attached with employers required to cover costs for equipment, software, and secure access to systems. Not to mention the cost of OHS compliance on top.

📖 Read our blog to get the facts, or get in touch. We can help you get ahead of it.

Last night we celebrated being recognised in two categories in the 2026 Bendigo Business Excellence Awards!

- Professional Services Award recognising our excellence in providing customised knowledge-based services
- Small and Succeeding Award recognising that we punch above our weight and continue to grow in a way that truly connects with customers

We are incredibly dedicated to the success of our clients and part of that dedication means that we need to create a successful business of our own to support us to do what we do.

The external validation for the pride we feel about our business is not necessary, but it's absolutely meaningful and we are grateful for the process and opportunity for reflection that Be.Bendigo offers our local businesses each year.

We also loved meeting with our fellow finalists at the celebration last night, congrats to all and can’t wait to see y’all at the gala!

Three years with StartUp Central Victoria! 🎉
Last week we were back with Startup Central Victoria, sharing everything founders need to know about IP, trademarks, copyright, confidentiality agreements, and protecting the business they're building with our Commercialising IP workshop.

There's something really special about working with entrepreneurs at this stage... The energy, the ideas, the ambition. We love being part of the journey.

Throughout the week, we received some amazing feedback from the Barbie-inspired workshop, which is always great to hear! We thought we'd share a couple with you..

"Thanks for the presentation tonight. It was very helpful in simplifying something I thought was going to make my brain explode."

"Your presentation was thought-provoking. Using the Mattel example was a great way to demonstrate the different aspects of commercialising IP, including a very realistic perspective on the cost of protecting any legal rights you may have. All the other presentations I've seen just talked about the concepts in the abstract. The only downside was the "Barbie Girl" ear worm, but fortunately that has now been resolved! 🤣"

We can't wait to support you & see where you all go from here.

We'd like you to get to know one of our new team members a little better...! ⚖️
Megan McDonald (she/her) is a scientist turned business lawyer who thrives on taking complex problems apart, understanding how they work and building practical solutions that actually move things forward.

Before law became her second language, Megan spent her days in laboratories developing, scaling and optimising viral and bacterial vaccine manufacturing processes. Working in science taught her to think systematically, manage risk, interrogate evidence and navigate complexity where precision matters. So you could say she’s no stranger to high-stakes problem solving.

Megan brings the same curiosity and analytical drive to her role as a commercial lawyer at Curium Legal. She’s seen the legal world from a few unique angles: from the lab to private practice to a government role in Biosecurity protecting the environment and agricultural industries.

Megan works with businesses and not-for-profits providing legal advice that is clear, commercial and actually helpful. No mystery, no jargon, no making things sound more dramatic than they need to be. Just sensible advice, a steady hand and a focus on helping clients get on with running their business.

When the laptop is closed, you’ll usually find Megan outdoors in the garden, exploring local trails or discovering new landscapes. Always on the lookout for her next adventure 🏔️

🚨 Are your employment contracts protecting your business?
Outdated or poorly drafted contracts and policies can really trip you up, particularly when it comes time to deal with bullying and harassment claims, or if you're wanting to complete a termination.
If you haven't reviewed your employment contracts and policies recently, now is the time. A proactive audit is far less costly than defending an unfair dismissal claim

📅 Stay tuned - we'll be hosting a seminar covering everything you need to know about Fair Dismissals. More details coming soon. It was wildly popular the last time we delivered this and we're expecting another sell out event.
In the meantime, reach out to our team if you'd like an employment health check or you need to streamline your workforce.
