Last week we celebrated National Family Business Day with a team morning tea, courtesy of our local family owned cafés, Bolla Milano (Adelaide) and Lime Espresso (Sydney).

As a family business ourselves, it was the perfect excuse to bring the team together, support local, and reflect on the impact of family businesses in Australia and New Zealand. Family businesses represent 70% of all businesses in Australia, they employ 50% of the workforce and generate an estimated $4.3 trillion in wealth.

Saturday 19 September 2026 was the official National Family Business Day. If you missed it, that doesn't mean you can't still support the cause - support family businesses, today and every day!

The Doyle's Guide 2026 rankings for Wills, Estates and Succession Planning in South Australia are out, and we're pleased to share that Louise Craven and Kasia Maczuga have been recognised as Leading Lawyers, and Catherine Fairlie as a Rising Star!

Louise, Kasia and Catherine continue to demonstrate every day why they earned this recognition; the whole team are glad to see that dedication has not gone unnoticed.

Did you know 7 in 10 Australian businesses are family-owned? That means most of the businesses you dealt with this week likely had someone's family name on the sign, and someone from that family working behind the scenes.

Next Saturday, 19 September 2026 is National Family Business Day.

We work with these families every day, and the thing that never gets old is how personal family business is for them. The second-generation owner who started sweeping the workshop floor at fourteen. The couple who debate product pricing on the drive home. The dad who has been retiring "in June" for six years running. The multiple generations that have seen their families flourish and grow alongside their business.

As a family-owned business ourselves, these are the clients we love working with and share their passion. We love having front row seats to their success, both in business and in their personal endeavours.

The Family Business Association is running several events across the country and has lots of information about how you can seek out and support your local family businesses. Recently, our own Sam Johnson had an opportunity to showcase our employment law expertise at the Employment Law and Workplace Relations Masterclass, hosted by Crown Leadership International Group.

Sam presented on safeguarding confidential information, working through what employers can practically do to protect proprietary information, where the line sits between poor judgement and conduct serious enough to justify dismissal, and what options are actually available when something goes wrong.

It was a great opportunity to share knowledge with HR leaders, business owners and other advisers and we extend our thanks to Crown Leadership International Group for the invitation to participate.

Last week we opened our doors to small and family businesses from across South Australia, as venue and catering sponsor of the ABRT 'Resilience in Business' networking evening as part of Small Business Week and the COSBOA roadshow.

We act for business owners at all stages of the business lifecycle every day. A room full of people talking openly about mental health, staying afloat, and having the courage to seek support when business gets tough is a room worth putting together. Owners, advisers, advocates and people from government and industry, all in the one place for a night of networking and connection.

Last week we hosted our second FBA Advisor Connect for the year. Industry expert Charles Galayini from GSA Insurance Brokers was our guest speaker, providing an overview of the current insurance market and highlighting some key insurance considerations for family business advisors.

Charles delivered an engaging presentation which covered key insurable risks at every stage of business and demonstrated how a business’ insurance needs can change and evolve through growth and expansion.

Great to have our team on the ground in Hobart for the 2026 Family Business Association APAC Conference, with Kasia proudly representing ADLV Law as an FBA SA State Partner.

From the opportunity to facilitate an insightful session on planning for Illness and Aging in Family Business, to discussions on the future of family businesses and the power of adaptability, it was a truly valuable few days connecting with peers and industry leaders from across the APAC region.

A standout reminder from the conference: successful family businesses are those that embrace change, think long-term, and are not afraid to have challenging conversations in the pursuit of best-practice planning.
