Labour law made easy with Celeste

Labour law made easy with Celeste Why this page? Many workers and employers don’t understand their rights & obligations. Labour law can feel complicated and intimidating, but it actually is not.

What if you get unfairly dismissed? Would you be able to stand up for yourself? So I am not a legal professional or practitioner, but I have gained extensive experience in labour-related matters over more than 20 years working in the private sector. Over the years I have often been surprised by what some companies get away with, and how many employees still do not know their basic workplace rights. Friends, colleagues, and people in my community frequently come to me for guidance and advice on these issues. That is what inspired me to start Labour Law Made Easy with Celeste — to share knowledge, create awareness, and help people better understand their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. Please like and share the page so that more people can benefit from this information.

1. If an official public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday automatically becomes an additional public holiday. This means there are two public holidays:
The Sunday (original public holiday)
The Monday (extra public holiday)

2. If you are scheduled to work both days
If you normally work Sundays and Mondays and you work on both days, then both days are treated as public holidays.
Under the BCEA:
Working on a public holiday must be paid at least double your normal daily wage.

So if you work both days:
Sunday: At least 2× your normal pay
Monday: At least 2× your normal pay
In practice, that means double pay for both days, because they are two separate public holidays.

3. Example
If your normal daily wage is R600:

Sunday (public holiday)
R1200
Monday (additional public holiday)
R1200
Total for the two days = R2400

📼 IF LABOUR LAW MADE EASY EXISTED IN THE 80s… 😂
Look at me looking like I’m about to tell somebody:
“My dear, before you sign that warning… READ IT!” 😂😂
But on a serious note…
South African workplaces have changed tremendously over the years. Today, employees have important protections under laws such as the Labour Relations Act, BCEA, EEA and OHSA.
But one thing hasn’t changed:
👉 Knowledge is power.
Whether it’s 1986 or 2026, never be afraid to ask:
“Is this fair?”
“What exactly am I signing?”
“What procedure should my employer follow?”
“What are my rights?”
Because sometimes the difference between accepting something unfair and challenging it successfully is simply knowing your rights.
And judging by this picture… 😂
I would definitely have been that colleague in the 80s whispering:
“Don’t resign yet. Come, let’s talk first.” 😭😂

Labour Law Tip: Under the BCEA, a public holiday may not be counted as annual leave, and if it falls on a day you would normally have worked, you're entitled to that day separately. So basically your employer needs to give u that day back either in the form of an off day or an additional annual leave day that's not deducted from ur leave balance.
