HORRIBLE MASACRE IN LAS VEGAS AND DEMANDS CALLING FOR _________________ IMMEDIATE GUN CONTROL…. some thoughts.
What happened in Las Vegas is horrific. Thousands of rounds of ammunition; FULLY automatic machine guns; Over 20 guns in Stephen Paddock’s possession. Calculated and pre-mediated. At the time of this writing we don’t know the “why” Paddock did it. The guy had an invisible past, no police record, and neighbors never said bad things about him. He previously worked for the federal government (I.R.S.) But something motivated this and we don’t know why.
So the immediate reaction by many is to demand gun control now! Hang the NRA, gun manufactures, gutless politicians, the Supreme Court! We want the laws changed now!
While I do agree there should be a debate, I also think that anger is a secondary emotion to that of sadness. Would it make sense to put the gun debate in our back pocket for right now, put aside our anger, and grieve for all those victims whose lives are forever changed? Perhaps consider gratitude for the, many heroes. First Responders. Doctors, taxi drivers, Police, individuals, strangers, fire fighters, doctors, drivers, and hospital staff?
Would it not make sense to do this first?
Is there an irony that believe it or not, the “pro gun” people (whatever that means) share just as much sadness as you, and praise the same gratitude that you do for the same heroes?
Consider for a moment, that “pro gun people” just come from a different point of view, but would share the same “the anti-gun “ people, values in desiring safety, less crime, and that life is important? Ironic?
Once we have grieved then, those that seek change should then press the debate. But for now we all should grieve.
