A Day in the Real World of Law ⚖️ | Career Day with Affordable Law Center
Today, we didn’t just talk about the law—we experienced it.
The day started like many others—as a working mom. I dropped off my two little ones at daycare (and next year, one more will have the honor of joining Career Day ❤️). Then we made our first stop at Starbucks to kick off the workday.
Before even stepping into the courthouse, the students got to see the real, everyday practice of law by observing me in Zoom court on a family case—a perfect introduction to how much of our work happens both inside and outside the courtroom.
We then headed to the courthouse, where we brought 2 middle school students and 3 elementary students for a full, behind-the-scenes look at how the justice system truly works.
One of the most impactful moments was First Appearance—where they learned the foundational principle of our legal system: innocent until proven guilty. They observed individuals facing a wide range of charges, from theft (including one individual who entered a guilty plea) to serious felony offenses, including homicide. It was a powerful, real-life lesson in how justice begins.
Their experience continued:
🔹 A visit to the jail, where they saw two defendants being released and learned what daily life looks like—how much time inmates may get outside, what they eat, where their belongings are stored, that there are no cell phones, and how many inmates a deputy is responsible for… and yes, they definitely learned they are not getting Chipotle Mexican Grill
🔹 Time with a courtroom deputy, where they got an up-close look at everything he carries and learned about his role in courtroom safety. The kids asked all about arresting people, and he answered every question. He even handed out his business card… which led to my son proudly telling everyone for the rest of the day that he had a “drive free card.” (Thankfully, by the time they’re driving, that deputy will be long retired 😂)
🔹 A meeting with a Magistrate to understand judicial decision-making
🔹 Insight from the Department of Revenue on child support enforcement
🔹 Watching an expert witness testify in a civil jury trial (yes—even about roof shingles!)
🔹 A special visit with the Clerk’s Office, where they were taken behind the scenes and shown the beautiful Lilly Pulitzer marriage room, where weddings are performed—such a unique side of the legal system.
🔹 Going behind the bench, touring the judge’s chambers
One of the most special moments for me personally was watching my son meet the judge, go behind the scenes, and have the honor of knocking her into court. A moment I’ll never forget ❤️
And an unexpected bonus—WPBF 25 News was there covering a major story. The students had the opportunity to speak with the cameraman and learn about his role in bringing courtroom stories to the public.
We were there witnessing the coverage unfold in real time:

Today wasn’t just Career Day.
It was perspective. It was exposure. It was inspiration.
