$15,048,526.25 Verdict on May 15, 2024 for our client, JOHN PAUL BEGLEY, as PR of the estate of Brandon Kyle Begley, deceased. After 4 years of extensive litigation, William M. Chapman, Esq. engaged in an 8 day trial in Orange County, Florida culminating in the $15 million+ verdict. The case was based on Brandon Begley’s (22 yrs old) attendance and participation at an Ayahuasca retreat wherein Soul Quest Church failed to call for medical help for several hours as Brandon Begley suffered from severe hyponatremia (low blood sodium) resulting in seizures, cerebral edema and death. Soul Quest Church was knowingly operating illegally and without any competent medical staff. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Begley family, as this litigation, trial and verdict was their only resource to pursue justice for their son.

We have been seeking justice on behalf of the father and mother of their 22 year old son, who tragically died on April 4, 2018, due to severe hyponatremia (low blood sodium), from which he experienced obvious and ominous signs and symptoms for over 3 hours, which were not recognized and for which he did not receive timely medical intervention, while attending a “weekend retreat” in Orlando. The entity which held the retreat and provided the “medicines” that we assert resulted in our clients’ son’s severe hyponatremia, and death, included a schedule I controlled substance, which is prohibited under the Controlled Substances Act. The entity claims that the substance, called “ayahuasca”, which contains a hallucinogen known as DMT, should be exempted from legal prohibition as a religious sacrament. The DEA, however, recently issued its final determination denying Soul Quest Church of Mother Earth, Inc. d/b/a Soul Quest Ayahuasca Church of Mother Earth Retreat & Wellness Center’s Petition for Religious Exemption to the federal Controlled Substances Act. The DEA’s factual findings in support of its denial provide substantial corroboration for our wrongful death claims, and bring us one step closer to obtaining justice for our clients’ son, and his family, by having those found to be responsible for this horrific, and completely preventable tragedy, held accountable.

The Drug Enforcement Administration has officially denied a Central Florida church’s petition for a religious exemption.
