Rent Control Final Vote coming up in PVD.
Providence renters and landlords are both at a breaking point, but for very different reasons.
On Friday, May 15th at 6:00 PM, the Providence City Council will vote on whether to override Mayor Smiley’s veto of rent stabilization. For renters, this vote represents fear, stability, and the question of whether they can afford to stay in the city they call home. For landlords, it raises serious concerns about taxes, insurance, maintenance, lead compliance, repairs, and whether small property owners can keep operating without being pushed out themselves.
This is bigger than a political talking point.
A family paying $1,200 today may not survive a sudden jump to $1,800.
A landlord paying rising taxes, $8,000 insurance bills, lead requirements, water, sewer, and repairs may not survive a cap that ignores the cost of ownership.
Both things can be true.
Providence is having a housing crisis conversation that should have happened years ago. Now the pressure is here, and the people most affected need to be in the room.
