Today, I am personally voting for Eric Nasarenko for D.A. He was always very pleasant and reasonable to deal with on cases. When he was on the city council, I also did a presentation to them about the destruction of a monarch habitat, including some steps that Ventura could take to help the butterflies, along the lines of Amsterdam, with going organic and planting pollinator~friendly plants in public spaces, and I felt he listened. Even though Ventura as a city has not yet implemented the possibilities of a city~wide pro~pollinator plan (which could help make us the greenest city on the Central Coast), as a citizen of Ventura, I appreciated the sincere attention of the council and their vote to at least look into that one case of habitat destruction. In all my interactions with candidate for Ventura County District Attorney Eric Nasarenko, I have personally appreciated his civility, professionalism, and his lack of personalizing any conflict between the “sides” ~ especially since in Ventura that is not always the case. The places where I have most enjoyed representing clients in the past are Mendocino County, Santa Barbara County, and even SLO County, largely because of the different vibe of the courts there as far as civility and also conveying that some value is placed on the individual in the system ~ in contrast to some of the pervasive themes in Ventura and the experience of dealing with (some) D.A.s and the system~holders here. The “sides” don’t have to hate each other; D.A.s should care about Justice in their own way, while we as defense attorneys are charged with defending personal freedom and seeking Justice on an individual level ~ that state of being where a person is not oppressed by her or his government and is actually seen. Without losing our “edge,” there are also times when we can work together towards Justice and progress, especially in chances to prioritize treatment and even some compassion over systemic incarceration. I feel like we could all have a better life experience, as fellow lawyers and as Venturans, with Eric Nasarenko in as D.A.
