A paralegal called me yesterday.

The process server they hired couldn’t get the job done because the house was inside a gated community.

She asked, “Can you serve it?”

Absolutely.

Documents were sent to me last night. Defendant was personally served first thing this morning. No issues. Done.

Then I checked my notes.

They called me 15 days ago for a quote, but apparently went with the cheaper option.

So they paid someone else to not get it done… then paid me to get it done.

Cheaper isn’t always cheaper. Sometimes it just means you pay twice.

Good thing we’re not soliciting, we’re serving legal documents.

What "due diligence" actually means in South Carolina service of process:

→ Multiple attempts at different times of day
→ Different days of the week
→ Documentation of each attempt — date, time, observations
→ A signed affidavit of attempts when service can't be completed

If your server only knocks once at 3pm on a Tuesday and gives up, that's not due diligence. That's a billable mistake.

Pro tip for anyone filing pro se in South Carolina:

Confirm your Affidavit of Service is on file with the clerk **before** your hearing date. Judges won't continue cases for missing paperwork — they dismiss them. We've seen it happen more than once.
