The DIJ Committee hosted a CLE presented by Maya Simek (she/her) on “Trauma Responsive, Identity Affirming Legal Practice: Working Effectively with LGBTQ+ Clients.”

Attorneys took away practical tools for building trust and creating more trauma-responsive, identity-affirming relationships with LGBTQ+ clients. We have only scratched the surface on this important topic. The CLE will be made available on-demand soon.

The DIJ Committee plans to keep the conversation going with additional educational opportunities and programming for OACDL members and anyone who works in the justice system.

Beau Cross is the President-Elect of OACDL, the current CLE Committee Chair, and the founding partner of Cross Law Office, LLC. His law firm, which opened its doors in 2019, currently has offices in Caldwell, Coshocton, and St. Clairsville.

Beau has been a practicing attorney since 2017, and has devoted a substantial amount of his time to criminal, traffic, and juvenile delinquency matters. He also handles some divorce and custody matters, including cases where he represents parents in proceedings against children services agencies.

Beau has presented at several CLE events, including ones in Ohio and in other states. He also dedicates a large portion of his practice to court appointed clients who cannot otherwise afford to hire their own attorney in rural Ohio. Between Beau and his two law partners, their firm covers about a 10-county radius in east central and southeastern Ohio, as well as nearby counties in West Virginia.

When he needs a break from the daily grind, Beau enjoys spending time on cruise ships, boating and fishing in Canada, traveling to Key West, or going to his hunting property.

Madam President! Ashley Jones is a criminal defense attorney and partner at AJLJ Law in Cleveland, Ohio with nearly 15 years of representing individuals accused of crimes across Northeast Ohio. Ashley’s practice encompasses all misdemeanor and felony trial work, and she also devotes a chunk of her practice to record sealing and expungement as well as firearm restoration petitions. Her firm’s mission of Relentless Representation; Persistent Justice is how she conducts her life.

Within OACDL, Ashley is proudly serving as the current President. She has made it a mission this year to strengthen membership not only in numbers, but also in support for one another professionally and personally. Prior to being President, Ashley served for many years as the CLE chair of OACDL developing programming for members to sharpen their skills as criminal defense attorneys.

From Senior Committee Chair, Joe Humpolick: “The senior committee is composed of anybody and everybody who wants to meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 5pm and have a discussion on anything and everything. We are open to all members of all ages and experiences. So you don’t have to have gray hair and a fading memory to join us or participate in any of our meetings. Remembering when Dan Blocker dressed up as a giant Easter bunny in an episode of Bonanza isn’t a qualification for membership. So just join us. Recent topics of discussion included the weather in Arizona, the stunts of Sky King, Pepe LePew, the travels of Chuck Strain, Lorin Zaner’s golf game, the New York Mets and the Chair’s health issues. Any discussion on anything is encouraged and welcomed. Just join us and join in, we’d like to hear from you. We think that the hour or so you spend with us may be some of the best fun you will have doing anything until our next meeting a month later.”
