Tomorrow, on March 5, 2026, during National Consumer Protection Week, the Social Security Administration (SSA) and its Office of the Inspector General (OIG) will lead National Slam the Scam Day.

Take part by using tools from SSA and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to recognize imposters — including Social Security-related scams — and stop scammers from stealing your money and personal information.
Help Us Slam the Scam!

Learn about common tactics and how to recognize the signs. For example:
An unexpected problem or offer of a prize or government benefit increase.
Pressure to act immediately.
Request for unusual payments like cryptocurrency, gift cards, gold bars, cash, or wire transfers, even with the promise of keeping your money safe.
Spread the word. Visit ssa.gov/scam for more information that could help you and others stay safe.
Report suspicious activity. Report Social Security-related issues to SSA OIG (oig.ssa.gov/report) and other concerns to the FTC (reportfraud.ftc.gov).

Welcome our new attorney, Taylor Sienerth!

Per Attorney Taylor Sienerth:
I am incredibly excited to be the newest member of Walkon Law Center! I received my Juris Doctorate from Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law in 2024 and my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Ohio State University Fisher College of Business in 2021. Prior to coming to Walkon Law Center, I was a public interest attorney representing low-income individuals in multiple areas of civil law. During my time at Ohio Northern University, I worked at a law firm that handled Social Security Disability appeals. I was also a member of the Law Review and published multiple law review notes, including one which discussed a United States Supreme Court decision on a denial of an SSI claim.

Social Security Celebrates its 90th Anniversary: On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Social Security Act. It originally began as retirement program and later expanded to include disability benefits.

Congratulations to our own Melanie! Melanie began her studies at Oakland Community College in the Paralegal Program in the fall of 2021. Participating in the Michigan Reconnect Program, she received her Associate in Applied Science (Paralegal), graduating Cum laude in May 2025. Melanie has worked at Walkon Law Center for almost 22 years and is a critical member of our staff. You may know her as our medical specialist, but she does much more than just medical records! As Melanie says, "Always keep your eye on the big picture!"

FACTS vs RUMORS

There has been a lot of information circulating in social media regarding Social Security. Some “news” is true, while some is not.

FACT: it is true that Social Security has taken measures to help increase the security of its services by requiring stronger identify verification. These steps are intended to help safeguard Social Security benefits and records from fraud.

RUMOR: Proof of identity applies to disability claims. This is a rumor. Disability and SSI applications are exempt from in-person identify proofing because an individual’s identify is verified at several points during the process.
