Always come from a place of empathy.

Seneca wrote that wealth neither teaches virtue nor destroys it — it amplifies what is already there.

The same is true of estate planning. The people who do it well are not trying to win against the system. They are trying to make sure the people they love are not left carrying the weight of their unfinished work.

What intentional stewardship looks like in practice:
A plan that reflects your actual family — not a generic template.
An estate your spouse can navigate without a lawyer holding their hand.
Children who understand what they will receive and what is expected of them.
A business succession that does not depend entirely on you surviving long enough.

Seneca believed wealth was a test of character. Your estate plan is how you pass it.

Follow along if you are building with intention.

Death gets most of the estate planning attention. Disability is statistically more likely and often more financially disruptive.

Five questions to ask your insurance advisor this month:
What is my actual income replacement percentage under my current disability policy?
Does my policy cover business income replacement or only personal income?
Do I have key person coverage for my role in the business?
What is the waiting period on my current policy — and do I have enough reserves to cover it?
Is my buy-sell agreement funded in a way that accounts for disability, not just death?

Most business owners find at least two gaps when they actually ask these questions.

Comment DISABILITY and I will send you the full framework.

Marcus Aurelius was not a pessimist. He was the most prepared man in Rome.

The Stoic practice of premeditatio malorum — premeditation of adversity — was not about dwelling on bad outcomes. It was about removing the shock of them so the people you love are not caught off guard.

Ask yourself honestly:
If you could not work for six months — what would happen?
If something happened to you tomorrow — what would your spouse need to know and do in the first thirty days?
If your income stopped — how long could your family maintain stability without selling assets?

These are not comfortable questions. They are important ones.

A plan is just a good answer to a hard question — built before the question ever has to be asked.

Follow along if you believe preparation is an act of love.

The LIFT audit takes thirty minutes and most people find at least two gaps they did not know existed.

LEGAL: Does your estate plan reflect your current family structure, business, and assets? When was it last reviewed?

INSURANCE: If you could not work for one year, would your family maintain their current lifestyle? Have you run the real number on life, disability, and key person coverage?

FINANCE: Is your financial plan integrated with your estate plan? Does your family know how to access liquidity in a crisis?

TAX: Do you know your current estate tax exposure? Is there a legal gifting strategy in place?

If any of those answers is "I do not know" — that is the gap.

Save this and go through it with your spouse this week.

Most business-owning parents know they have a gap. The gap between what they have built and what their family would actually have access to if something went wrong.

What a first planning conversation actually covers:
What you own — and how it is currently titled.
What your family would receive and how they would access it.
Where the most important gaps are.
What a plan that actually reflects your life looks like.

The conversation takes about forty-five minutes. It is free. Most people leave with more clarity than they expected.

Here is how to break that pattern in one generation:
Name where your important documents are — and tell someone.
Know what you actually own — and write it down.
Have one honest conversation with your spouse about what happens if something changes.
Build something your kids will actually thank you for.

You do not have to fix everything this week. You just have to be more intentional than the generation before you.

Follow along if you are done with the shoebox.

Delay is usually the most expensive part of planning

Not because something bad is guaranteed to happen
but because waiting turns calm decisions into pressured decisions

Start with three simple questions

who would need clarity if something happened to me
what decisions would they be forced to make without me
and what could I put in place now while I still have time to think clearly

The best moment to plan is before it feels urgent

That is when you can lead with wisdom
not pressure

Most small business owners are the key person without having a plan for what that means.

Ask yourself these questions:
If I were hospitalized tomorrow what would actually stop running?
Do my key clients have a relationship with anyone other than me?
Is there someone with legal authority to sign contracts or access accounts if I cannot?
Is there a key person life insurance policy on me that is payable to the business?

You do not have to solve all of this today. But naming your biggest gap is a valuable first step.

A business that depends on one person without a plan is a business with one point of failure.

Follow along because this week we are naming the risks most small business owners have never put on paper.

If you grew up on the Oregon Trail you already know what happens when you ford the river without checking the depth first.

Estate planning procrastination looks exactly like that.

Here is your Gen X checklist:
Do you have a will that actually reflects your current life?
Do you have a named guardian for your children?
Does someone know where your documents are?
Is your life insurance current?
Does your business have a succession plan?

None of us were taught this stuff. We had to figure out the internet by ourselves too. But we figured it out.

You can figure this out.

Comment FORD if you are ready to stop fording rivers unprepared.
