As an attorney who has practiced law in the USA as well as overseas, and who has built her own law firm in both locations, our founder, Svetlana Kamyshanskaya, is also uniquely qualified to help foreign firms enter the US market and/or raise capital. In the last two years alone she has helped seven foreign firms successfully bring their goods and services to the US market, and helped arrange for five firms to raise capital from US investors. Our attorneys have a success record offering both guidance and a full suite of corporate legal services, making Primum the ideal choice for startups and privately-held legal firms looking for an expert lawyer who will help them reach their maximum potential.

As the year winds down, I've been thinking less about what to add next year and more about what I want to stop carrying.

One of those things: confusing great client service with being available 24/7.

Responsiveness has always mattered to me. When a client's mid-transaction, I want them to know we're there.

But a business can't run on one person constantly checking their email.

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.

So before this year ends, I'm finishing a new unified email system at the firm. When a client reaches out, the right person sees it, owns it, and handles it, without everything depending on whether I personally saw the email first.

Sounds like an operations fix. It's actually bigger than that.

Founders start by delivering great service through personal effort. Answer every email. Solve every problem. Make yourself available because you care.

Eventually, caring about your clients means building systems that serve them better than your personal availability ever could.

Fewer heroics. Better systems. Clearer accountability.

What's one thing in your business you're ready to stop solving with personal effort, and start solving with a system?

Last week I was at my kid's back-to-school night.

Half the event wasn't about the curriculum. It was just explaining what the year would look like. What's coming, what to expect, what dates matter.

Nobody there is trying to become a teacher. They just don't want to feel lost.

I realized that's exactly what clients want from us.

They don't need to become lawyers. They need to know what we're doing, why, what we need from them, and what happens next.

When a client hires me, I don't want their matter to disappear into a black box. Documents and advice are half the job. The other half is making sure they're never wondering what's coming.

Uncertainty creates stress. 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Sometimes the best client service is just answering one question before anyone has to ask it: what happens next?

PS — here's my daughter, showcasing the different faces for different emotions. We're working on being able to name what we're feeling. A skill you can start building at four, and one that never stops paying off, in a career or otherwise.

Recently, everyone's talking about AI risk.

Most of them can't tell you what the actual danger is. They just know it's big, and it's scary, and it's happening in a lab somewhere they'll never see.

Meanwhile, the risk sitting in their own business goes completely unmanaged.

Same computer password for three years. A contract nobody's read since it was signed. Data they collect and have never once asked whether they're allowed to keep.

That's not abstract. That's not happening in a lab. That's happening on your laptop, right now, and you can fix it this week.

Global AI risk, I can't do anything about. I read the news like everyone else.

Business risk, I deal with every day. And most of it is boring, fixable, and completely ignored.

When's the last time you actually looked at where your business is exposed? What can you do now to assess your business and its risks, and minimize them?

This week we hosted our referral partners together with Infinity Law Group, and James Tsikerdanos from How To Manage a Small Law Firm gave a talk called "Read The Room: Close The Deal."

It hit on something I see all the time.

Some of the smartest founders I know have lost good people, good investors, or good deals over something that never shows up in the paperwork.

They couldn't read the room.

I've spent 25+ years watching people with airtight logic walk into a board meeting, an investor update, or a one-on-one with an early employee and lose it in the first five minutes.

Not because they were wrong.

Because they didn't notice the board member had already checked out. Or that the employee wasn't asking about equity, they were asking whether they mattered.

They reacted. They defended. They explained harder.

And explaining harder has never once fixed a room that's gone cold.

James put words to what I'd been watching for years.

As leaders, respond, don't react.

As salespeople (and every one of us is one, whether the title says so or not), listen to resolve, not to be liked.

Read the room. Read the person. Then the part almost everyone skips: read yourself. Be honest about how you're landing.

Good to be in a room this week with people I don't get to see enough. And a good reminder that the soft skills are sometimes the hard ones.

I said it before: you don't build something real alone. You build it with the right people around you.

That goes for us too. A lot of our clients use us like outside general counsel, which means, in a real way, we're part of their team.

Angela Kwok just joined Primum as Senior Corporate Counsel. Years of VC financing, M&A, and fund formation work for startups across Silicon Valley.

So who joins our side matters too.
