Last month, LSC Associate Legal Director Stephany Arzaga joined PLI’s panel, “Updates to Representing Unaccompanied Children and Youth in California: Navigating Removal Proceedings for Youth Eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status.”

The session explored important updates for advocates representing unaccompanied children and youth in removal proceedings, including Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), immigration court proceedings, ICE check-ins, and trauma-informed practices.

🗨️A recent Associated Press report found that ICE has stopped publicly displaying the locations of many people in immigration detention who have final removal orders.

Immigration attorneys told AP that the change has made it more difficult to locate clients and loved ones—and can create additional challenges when urgent legal action is needed.

For over 25 years, Legal Services for Children has provided legal and social services to unaccompanied immigrant children in federal detention. The federal government has ended the contract allowed LSC and hundreds of other attorneys and social workers across the country to provide these vital services.

No child should have to face a courtroom, make sense of complicated legal proceedings, or fight for their future without an advocate by their side.

More and more kids, and even babies, are being forced to show up for immigration court alone without lawyers, adequate resources or protection.

Immigrant children are at risk of deportation to dangerous situations under a new policy. Special Immigrant Juvenile Status was created for abused, abandoned, and neglected immigration children to be able to seek safety in the U.S. However, the federal government now takes years to process these applications. A new policy allows these vulnerable children and youth to be deported simply because of the government's delay in processing their applications.

LSC's Associate Legal Director, Stephany Arzaga, reports that the Bay Area immigration judge that hears the cases of unaccompanied children, including children in federal detention, is applying this policy to children who have filed their applications and are waiting to be approved, putting them at risk.

We’re excited to share that LSC, Senior Attorney David White will be joining other guardianship experts for Practising Law Institute’s California Guardianship Law 2026 on Tuesday, September 1!

David will participate in the session “Post-Guardianship Proceedings and Special Issues in California,” sharing his expertise on California guardianship law and practice.

The program is a great opportunity for attorneys interested in learning the basics of California guardianship law and procedure or taking on pro bono cases with legal services organizations in California.
