For many years, there was a scientific misconception that bees should not be able to fly with their large round bodies and small delicate wings. If you’ve seen how a bee can hover and float, they defy these expectations and take flight with grace and agility. This paradox always reminded me that anything is possible, though scientists now understand that bees use a figure eight pattern to achieve their flexible flight. Bees have long been my personal symbol, reminding me to be optimistic and never let limitations define my possibilities. They also incorporate my maiden name initial B. I wear a tiny diamond bee pendant on a necklace from my husband everyday.

After almost 10 years of marriage, I wanted to incorporate my married name when I decided to rebrand our firm. My married last name is Flores, Spanish for flowers. My maiden name in French, belle, means beautiful. My names together mean pretty flowers, so I wanted to incorporate a bee and a floral motif when designing our new logo. The four bees come together to create a “bee flower.” The four bees represent two clients and two attorneys. They put their heads together and the result is something like we get in mediation, a new way of looking at an issue to reach a fruitful outcome.

The more I am called on to arbitrate disputes, the more respect I have for our judges. It's a challenge to make the right call, and it is mentally draining work. I also appreciate the advocates I work with. They are doing good work for their clients and forcing me to think. So tell a judge thank you today, this stuff is not easy!
