This took me a long time to write, because the hurt is there and hurts in a different way than any other pup I’ve had before. I’ve had dogs my entire life, so when my sister asked me a little over a year and a half ago if we could take Max (“Scout”), our answer was of course, yes. He was in pretty bad shape, couldn’t stand up very well, had sores all over him and was afraid to eat. When he did, it took days for his belly to allow him to keep it all down because he was so malnourished. But he was a great guy… always wanted to be with us, wanted to be one of the pack and ALWAYS curious!
If you would have told me I’d only have a year and a half or so with our Maximus Aurelius, I would have never believed you. He was so happy, so carefree and healthy for the first time in what we knew was a long time. But sadly, our Max started losing weight, started looking bad and stopped eating. It was a slow progression, one that I feel terrible for catching too late. He wasn’t in pain for long I hope, but we watched him pass last week and cross to the Rainbow Bridge to be with Ginny, Duncan, princess, piper and all the other pups who we’ve loved before him. But we’ll love him forever and miss his crazy antics every day.
Rest in peace my Mad Maxxie, your time with us was way too short and I hope we gave you the best last piece of your journey that you could have wanted. We love your heart and will miss you dearly. Run free and live eternally with a light heart - if ever anyone deserved it, it’s you.
