Across Indian Country, summer is a season of powwows, cultural gatherings, and community celebrations that bring together Tribal Nations to honor traditions, strengthen relationships, and celebrate Indigenous identity. You can find gatherings happening near you through the PowWows.com events calendar at https://www.powwows.com/.

While every gathering reflects the unique customs of its Tribal community, these events share a common purpose: preserving culture, supporting future generations, and reinforcing the strength of Native communities. You can read more about the roots of this tradition at https://www.powwows.com/history-of-the-powwow/.

Cultural traditions continue to thrive because Tribal Nations exercise their inherent right to preserve and protect them. Peebles Bergin is honored to support the legal foundations that help make these traditions possible. Learn more about our work at https://www.ndnlaw.com.

The article highlights Blakeโ€™s Modoc heritage, his former service as Attorney General of the Modoc Nation, and his work representing Tribal Nationsโ€”including the Wyandotte Nation. It also offers a fascinating look at the often-overlooked role Native people played in California history.

Weโ€™re proud to see Blakeโ€™s story and commitment to Indian Country recognized.

This August, nearly 1,000 Native American artists representing more than 200 Tribal nations will transform the historic Santa Fe Plaza into one of the most celebrated expressions of Indigenous creativity in the world. https://www.swaia.org/santa-fe-indian-market

Now in its 104th year, the Santa Fe Indian Market returns August 15 and 16 with a theme that resonates deeply: Empowered Resilience, Centuries in the Making. From jewelry and pottery to textiles, painting, and fashion, the market honors traditions inherited, reimagined, and carried forward by contemporary Native artists.

Cultural continuity is inseparable from sovereignty. When Tribal Nations have the legal infrastructure to protect their lands, govern their communities, and preserve their traditions, events like this become possible. At Peebles Bergin, supporting that infrastructure is the work we show up for every day. ndnlaw.com

Every year in August, communities around the world observe the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, a UN observance recognizing Indigenous cultures, knowledge, and rights. https://www.un.org/en/observances/indigenous-day

For Tribal Nations throughout the United States, the day also highlights the importance of sovereignty, self-governance, and the enduring government-to-government relationship between Tribal Nations and the United States.

Peebles Bergin remains committed to helping Tribal governments protect their lands, cultures, resources, and futures through the practice of Federal Indian Law.

Inside a corrections facility in Littlerock, Washington, a cedar totem pole now stands at the entrance of Cedar Creek Corrections Center, carved by incarcerated Native men, awakened in ceremony, and tasked with protecting every living thing inside and outside of those walls.

Albert "Al" Smith, a Suquamish, Shoshone-Bannock, and Pima elder, has built a carving program at Cedar Creek through the Indigenous nonprofit Unkitawa, connecting incarcerated Native men to inter-tribal and intergenerational traditional practices as a pathway to healing and cultural identity.

Cultural continuity does not pause for circumstance. Peebles Bergin is proud to advocate for the legal frameworks that protect Indigenous cultural rights and support Tribal Nations in preserving the traditions that sustain their people. ndnlaw.com
