If you are behind on your mortgage payments you can contact our friends over at Economic Growth Corp who may be able to assist you in getting funds to get your home caught up. This could help prevent foreclosure or the necessity of filing a Chapter 13 bankruptcy to save your home!

Looks like the Homeowner Assistance Fund for Illinois homeowners (earning up to 150% AMI) will be launching in April 2022: https://www.illinoishousinghelp.org/ilhaf

Up to $30,000 available per household—more details forthcoming but the website as a good list and FAQs.

People are being encouraged to call their mortgage servicers now to prepare for the application—or a HUD approved housing counseling agency—which GROWTH is. Please refer anyone to our office, specifically James Jones, who can work with the client on their behalf. We received a grant by the IL Housing Development Authority to assist anyone in Illinois who is behind on their mortgage because of COVID.

You can also use our financial education videos at any time too to refer your clients: https://www.economicgrowthcorporation.com/financial-literacy--housing-counseling.html

It provides a good overview of the services we provide as a HUD-approved housing counseling agency.

If you are considering filing a bankruptcy, and more specifically filing a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you should do so sooner rather than later. The Fed is looking to increase the federal funds rate which will in turn increase the federal prime rate. By filing before the rate increases take effect you would be able to lock in a lower interest rate in your Chapter 13 for your secured debts you pay through the plan.

The Federal Reserve said it would accelerate the pace of its tapering of bond purchases, and eyed three hikes of its benchmark interest rate next year.

Nearly 12 million renters in the US will owe over 5k in back rent by January. Congress needs to act by giving landlords tax incentives and/or direct assistance to work with renters to allow these amounts to be paid over 2+ years. We already have several non-profits who would be able to assist in implementing this type of program. We also need to amend the bankruptcy code to allow these amounts to be paid over time through a chapter 13 bankruptcy with less incentives for landlords if this path is chosen. But, in order to take advantage of the extended period the renters need to first attempt a workout through a non-profit. If a workout is done, but the renter has to file a bankruptcy for some other reason. The the workout and incentives should be available for both landlords and renters. Very happy to assist in developing the legislative language should any Representative/Senator want to touch base with me.

Each year, only a fraction of the Americans who could benefit financially from bankruptcy actually seek relief. Economists say some don’t file because collectors aren’t aggressively pursuing them, while others may strategically delay filing because bankruptcy could benefit them more down the roa...
