Upcoming CLE: Naturalization 101

Join for Naturalization 101, a Citizenship Day CLE designed for new and experienced attorneys, as well as community advocates!

Led by Richard Link, Staff Attorney at JustCause, this training will cover the naturalization process and eligibility requirements, common issues and pitfalls, best practices for assisting Lawful Permanent Residents on their path to U.S. citizenship, and important policy updates.

With immigration policies continuing to evolve, knowledgeable advocates and volunteer attorneys play an important role in helping members of our community understand their rights and navigate the citizenship process with confidence.

🌟 A Successful Day of Service for Rochester’s Haitian Community! 🌟

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make our recent Haitian Community Legal Clinic a success last week!

Together, 11 attorney volunteers generously shared their time and assisted 25 clients, helping community members connect with legal support and resources during a time of continued uncertainty for many Haitian families.

🤝 We were also joined by 4 non-legal volunteers, who provided invaluable support throughout the clinic. Their participation is an important reminder that you don’t have to be an attorney to play a meaningful role in expanding access to justice.

Clinics like this are only possible through collaboration. From attorneys providing legal guidance to non-legal volunteers helping with interpretation and other essential needs, every person contributes to creating a more accessible and welcoming experience for our clients.

A huge thank you to our partners at LASROC and to every attorney and non-legal volunteer who showed up for our Haitian neighbors. Your compassion, and commitment helped ensure that 25 members of our community had greater access to the legal support they needed. 💙⚖️

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Malcolm Kim 🌟

At JustCause, pro bono attorneys can make a life-changing difference for clients navigating complex legal systems. Today, we’re proud to recognize Malcolm Kim for his dedicated advocacy on behalf of one of our clients.

Malcolm assisted Juan with appealing a Social Security Disability benefits claim in the Western District of New York. Through his representation and advocacy, Malcolm was able to secure a back award of benefits for Juan, providing access to benefits that can offer meaningful financial stability and support.

For individuals living with disabilities, Social Security benefits can be essential to meeting basic needs and maintaining independence. Yet navigating the appeals process can be complicated and overwhelming, particularly without legal representation. Pro bono attorneys like Malcolm help ensure that clients don’t have to face that process alone.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Kisner Jean 🌟

At JustCause, our volunteers make an incredible impact, and you don’t have to be an attorney to make a difference.

We’re grateful to recognize Kisner Jean, a non-legal volunteer who recently provided interpretation assistance during intakes for 15 Haitian community members seeking legal help as they navigate uncertainty and challenges related to recent changes affecting Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Language access is an essential part of access to justice. Kisner’s support helped clients communicate their experiences, understand the intake process, and connect with our Immigration Unit during an especially uncertain time.

Non-legal volunteers like Kisner are an important part of making our work possible. Whether it’s providing interpretation, assisting at clinics, helping with community outreach, supporting events, or lending another skill, there are so many ways volunteers can use their time and talents to serve their neighbors.

🏡 Opening Doors to Opportunity Through Pro Bono Service

Homeownership can change the course of a family's future, providing stability, security, and a foundation for building generational wealth.

We're grateful to recognize Richard J. Olson, whose pro bono service helped three clients achieve homeownership through Habitat for Humanity. His dedication gave these families more than legal assistance, it helped them take an important step toward a brighter and more secure future.

Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates homes that are then sold to first-time homebuyers for no more than 30% of their total household income, creating affordable homeownership opportunities that help families build more than just financial security.

Volunteer attorneys like Richard demonstrate how pro bono service extends far beyond the courtroom. By donating their time and expertise, they help remove barriers and create lasting opportunities for individuals and families.

🌈⚖️ Building Community Through Partnership

We are incredibly grateful to the Rochester Rainbow Union for welcoming us into their space to host a Free LGBTQIA+ Legal Clinic.

As Rochester's only public LGBTQ+ library and community center, the Rochester Rainbow Union provides an inclusive, welcoming space where community members can connect, learn, and access valuable resources. It was the perfect setting to help individuals connect with legal services in a safe and supportive environment.

During the clinic, community members had the opportunity to meet with volunteer attorneys, be screened for legal services, and learn more about resources available to address a variety of civil legal needs.

Partnerships like this remind us that expanding access to justice takes a community. We're grateful to work alongside organizations like the Rochester Rainbow Union that share our commitment to supporting and empowering our neighbors.

A special thank you to our wonderful volunteer attorneys, Logan Geen and Sebastian Szczebiot, for generously donating their time and expertise to help make this clinic a success. Your commitment to serving our community and expanding access to legal services makes a meaningful difference.
