Ever wondered what those actually are?

They're almost never law firms. They're attorney referral services. Companies that collect your name, contact info, and case details from that form, and then sell it to whichever lawyer they have a paid relationship with. You think you're being matched with the best attorney for your situation. You're really just being sold as a lead to whoever's paying them.

Here's the specific problem that creates in upstate New York. If you're in Rochester, Buffalo, or Albany, the lawyer you get matched with is often based in New York City. Sometimes even outside New York entirely. That lawyer may never step foot in your county, may never appear at your local courthouse, and definitely doesn't know the local judges, adjusters, and defense attorneys the way a real local attorney does.

New York just made it much harder to sue drunk and texting drivers. Most people haven't heard about it yet.

On May 26, 2026, Governor Hochul signed a sweeping change to New York's motor vehicle injury law into effect as part of the state budget. And in doing so, she handed the insurance industry one of the biggest wins it has had in decades.

What actually changed: New York eliminated something called the "90/180 rule." For decades, this rule allowed accident victims to sue for pain and suffering if their injury kept them from their usual daily activities like going to work, taking care of their family, everything they'd normally do, for at least 90 of the 180 days after the crash. That category is now gone.

The people that this hurts the most are those hit by a drunk driver or texting driver who suffers a serious but non-permanent injury. The kind that keeps you out of work for 3, 4, 5, 6 months. The kind that upends your life without leaving a scar. Under the old law, those people had a clear path to hold the drunk or texting driver accountable. Under the new law, most of them don't, unless their injury falls into one of the remaining narrower categories like fracture, permanent limitation, or disfigurement.

The reform was sold as a way to lower insurance premiums. Skeptical? You should be. About 20 years ago, Congress passed the Graves Amendment prohibiting lawsuits against rental car and leasing companies. The promise was the same. Less litigation means lower rates for consumers. What actually happened? Rental and leasing rates did not go down. Rental company profits went up.

So let's check back in a few years and see whether New Yorkers' auto insurance premiums actually drop, or whether it's the insurance companies' profits that go up instead.

You were in a car accident. The ambulance came. You told them you felt fine. Now it's the next day and you're in real pain. Do you still have a case?

Yes. But you need to act now.

Here's why this happens. The adrenaline surge from being in a serious crash floods your body with hormones that can completely mask pain, sometimes for hours, sometimes for a full day or more. It's why people walk away from bad wrecks saying "I'm okay" and then wake up the next morning barely able to move.

This is called delayed-onset pain, and every legitimate doctor knows it's real. Neck injuries, back injuries, concussions, soft tissue damage, all of these commonly show up hours or days after the crash, not at the scene.
