Ahead of National Coming Out Day on October 11, we’re taking a look back at how the day began.

In 1988, LGBTQ+ activists 𝑱𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑶’𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒚 and 𝑫𝒓. 𝑹𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒕 𝑬𝒊𝒄𝒉𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒈 founded 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆, choosing October 11 to mark the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights.

Their work was rooted in the belief that visibility matters - that being known, seen, and understood can help create change.

That history continues to resonate today. For LGBTQ+ individuals and families, living openly can also bring important legal considerations involving marriage, parentage, adoption, estate planning, surrogacy, and other family matters.
