“DON’T LEAVE ANYTHING UNSAID”
The coronavirus, Covid 19, has brought home to each of us the truth of this quote from Governor Charlie Baker of Massachusetts. We in Kentucky have been relatively lucky in the impact of the virus on our community, to our great relief. However, it is a wake-up call to all of us, regardless of age, or circumstances.
Are we as individuals prepared to have someone make medical decisions for us, to make financial decisions for us if we become ill? Have we as parents of minor children thought about, discussed, decided and recorded who should care for our children if we cannot because of health problems or death? What about the disposition of property if, God forbid, we were to die? Does your family know if you have documents like powers of attorney or wills or trusts? Do they know where to find them if necessary? Have you thought about who should perform the services as agent or personal representative for you? Have you discussed these appointments with you family? Recorded these choices in your documents? When was the last time you looked at the documents you drafted when the children were young?
Don’t leave anything unsaid. While you are staying Safe at Home, use this time to review your legal support documents and when the “all clear” is sounded, if you need to do so, consult your elder law attorney to create or update them.
