One of the most common requests I receive is from adult children who want to set up estate planning documents for mom and dad. Adults 18 and older can create estate planning documents, but only for themselves. Talk to your friends and family about estate planning. Encourage them to review their estate planning documents regularly. Remember, estate planning is a gift to your family and loved ones.

When a legal document is needed, whether you are the principal or the agent acting on their behalf, you expect that document to serve its purpose. What happens if your bank or financial institution refuses? If you have a Power of Attorney, take it to your local bank and provide a copy. Ask the staff to review the document and advise on their policies as to what is required in the event your agent needs to exercise their power. Special forms? Get a copy. Something you need to sign? Set that up right away. Understanding your bank's policies and procedures can prevent unnecessary delays for your agent, allowing them to act promptly on your behalf.
