Hurt in a rental golf cart in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, or Fort Morgan? Who pays?
After a wreck, the first question usually isn't "whose fault?" It's "whose insurance?" Our new blog post walks through it. The short answer: rental golf cart insurance is rarely one policy. It's usually a stack of policies, plus the rental contract you tapped through on your phone.
A few key points from the post:
• Orange Beach and Gulf Shores require cart owners to carry liability insurance. But Alabama's minimum liability limit is $25,000 per injured person, and after a head injury or a broken hip, that doesn't go far.
• A rental waiver is not automatically the last word. Whether it holds up depends on what it says, who signed it, who got hurt, and what caused the wreck.
• Your own auto policy may or may not cover a rented cart. It turns on the words in your policy, not on what the rental desk tells you. If a thinly insured car hit your cart, your own UM/UIM coverage may matter most.
• Carts belong on designated streets posted at 25 mph or less. A cart on Canal Road, Perdido Beach Boulevard (Hwy 182), or Orange Beach Boulevard (Hwy 161) can mean a coverage problem and a 1% problem under Alabama's contributory-negligence rule.
