Governor Bill Anoatubby has been an inspirational leader to all of us for four decades. He and the Chickasaw Nation have also been incredible supporters of OCU Law. From the sponsorship of our Chickasaw Nation Law Library to his support for our Tribal Sovereignty Institute, and so many other initiatives, Governor Anoatubby has always believed in our work at OCU Law. We are deeply grateful, we thank him for his service, and we wish him well as he retires from elected office.

The artwork for Sovereignty Symposium ###VIII was created by Cheyenne and Arapaho artist Gordon Yellowman. Yellowman incorporates the Old Cheyenne and Arapaho ledger art style into his unique contemporary ledger art style.

"Inter-Tribal Ladies of Justice" was designed as a parallel of the Lady Justice statue. Lady Justice is a timeless personification of the legal system, typically a robed woman holding scales and a sword, and often blindfolded to signify impartial judgment. Yellowman uses that same symbolism in this piece.

The four women depicted represent different eras of tribal women's attire: the Ghost Dance Dress, Buckskin Dress, Jingle Dress, and finally the Ribbon Skirt, which is marked with handprints representing missing and murdered indigenous women.

The Symposium theme "250 Years Later: Sovereignty, Survival, and Self-Determination" influenced Yellowman's design with elements incorporated to show the parallels of independence and sovereignty. Yellowman notes, "Protecting our sovereignty is the central core of our sacred way of life."

Each spring, OCU Law 1Ls compete in an oral argument competition. The students put in a lot of hard work to prepare, and they did an excellent job. Great job to all of the students, and congratulations to Karstyn Cantrell and Acacia McDonald, who won the final round, and Hadley Cope and Josie Callen, who came in a close second. And a huge thank you to our judges, who volunteer their time to participate!
