Before you can file for divorce in Texas, there are residency requirements you need to meet.

You must have lived in the county where you are filing for 90 days and in Texas for six months.

Knowing this timeline ahead of time can help you plan your next steps.

Wondering what a judge actually weighs in a custody case?

It comes down to two things: is the child safe, and can you provide the care they need to thrive.

Keeping that focus can make all the difference in how your case is viewed.

A common 50/50 custody schedule starts with picking a consistent exchange day and location, like dropping off and picking up at school.

For holidays, many families split Thanksgiving and Christmas and add extra time in the summer.

If you and your co-parent stay cordial, you have more flexibility to make the schedule work for your child.

If your spouse refuses to sign the divorce paperwork or says they will not agree to it, that does not stop your case.

In the end, the only signature that actually finalizes a Texas divorce is the judge's.

You still have a path forward even without your spouse's cooperation.

Wondering what actually determines spousal support payments?

Judges look at the length of the marriage, what steps you have taken to reduce the need for support, your minimum living expenses, and whether your spouse can afford to pay.

Understanding these factors can help you know what to expect.

One of the biggest custody mistakes we see is feeling like you have to respond to every message from the other parent.

If the text or social media message is not about your child, you do not need to reply.

Setting that boundary can protect your peace of mind during a difficult time.

Start by looking at bank statements and credit cards, since there is usually a trove of information there.

Check any shared accounts you both access, look through your spouse's vehicle if you can, and let your attorney use discovery to find what may be hidden.

Debt from a marriage has to get paid somehow, and a judge will decide how if you and your spouse cannot agree.

For credit card debt, the court looks at what the card was used for and who has the ability to pay it.

The best custody arrangements for young children are the ones that let them build a strong relationship with both parents.

That does not always mean equal time, since the right schedule depends on each family's work and life circumstances.

The best way to reduce fees in a divorce is to be reasonable, since costs pile up when either side refuses to compromise.

A DIY divorce can work if there are no kids and no property involved, but if either one is in the picture, get help instead.
