This week marks the end of an era — my very first set of interns, and , are officially wrapping up their time at the firm as they begin their next chapter: law school at my alma mater, Detroit Mercy School of Law.

These two started with me when I first launched the firm — when my “office” was still my home office. Over the last 3 years, they’ve grown alongside me, learning the ropes of law while I learned how to run a firm. They came in as freshmen in college and quickly proved to be irreplaceable.

Kaydence was so responsible and dependable that I was able to leave for vacations knowing she could manage everything from client calls, addressing their personal needs, to drafting motions and complaints. She is a natural leader. Donika truly took ownership of our family law docket, showing empathy, professionalism, and an instinct for problem-solving.

They’re both natural leaders, fast learners, and without a doubt, future powerhouse attorneys. I’m going to miss them around the office, but I know this is just the beginning. I can’t wait to see what they accomplish — and I know we’ll be working together again soon.

Meet Our Intern, Christina Samona

Christina is a Senior at St. Catherine of Siena Academy with a clear vision for her future in law. Although she has family members in the legal field, it wasn’t until last summer that her interest truly came to life. While shadowing her aunt, Rita Soka, Christina had the chance to observe courtroom proceedings and witness the legal process in action. Seeing the focus, dedication, and real-world impact of the work made a lasting impression. Watching her aunt’s passion for helping others and dedication to justice made her even more interested in pursuing a career in law.

This summer she’s taking that next step through her internship at Soka Law, where she is gaining valuable hands-on experience and learning more about the responsibilities and rewards of the profession. Christina’s curiosity, drive, and enthusiasm for the law continue to grow, and we’re proud to have her on our team as she prepares for a promising future in the legal field.

Meet Our Intern, Alana Kas-Shamoun!

Alana graduated with the Class of 2025 from St. Catherine of Siena Academy and will be attending the University of Detroit Mercy this fall. During her junior and senior years of high school, she was inspired by Judge Cheryl Matthews, who spoke at her school’s career day and sparked Alana’s interest in the legal field. Before that, she had planned to pursue a career in the medical field but after meaningful conversations with Rita Soka, who herself transitioned from medicine to law, Alana felt understood and discovered how impactful the legal profession can be in serving and advocating for others. This summer, Alana will be gaining hands-on legal experience by drafting pleadings, attending court hearings, meeting with clients, and assisting with client communications. These opportunities will help prepare her and support her goal of becoming a lawyer. With strong values, a driven spirit, and a heart for justice, we’re excited to welcome Alana to the Soka Law team!

Did You Know There’s a Faster, Easier Way to Get Divorced in Michigan?

I’m always surprised by how many people call and ask: “Is there a way to get divorced if we already agree on everything?” The answer is yes—and it’s called Collaborative Divorce.

Michigan now offers this option for couples who can agree on the five major issues of divorce:
1️⃣ Child custody
2️⃣ Parenting time
3️⃣ Child support
4️⃣ Alimony (spousal support)
5️⃣ Division of assets and debts

If both parties reach an agreement on these points, we can file a Collaborative Divorce Petition instead of a contested complaint. This process is smoother, more cost-effective, and much faster than traditional divorce.

Only one party (the Plaintiff) has to appear in court to finalize everything—just like in a standard divorce, where the Defendant doesn’t need to attend. That means no drawn-out litigation, no months of waiting for court dates, and no unnecessary attorney fees.

At the end of the day, both parties will reach the same result—but with Collaborative Divorce, they do so with far less stress, time, and money spent. If you or someone you know is considering divorce and wants to explore a simpler path, let’s talk.

2024 was a year to remember—my first year running my solo practice, traveling to Europe with my husband, hosting incredible events, and teaching at Detroit Mercy. I offered great internship and shadowing opportunities for pre-law and high school students. Grateful for the support of my clients, friends, and family. Here’s to making 2025 even better! ✨

Meet and welcome our fall intern at Soka Law Group, Angelina Eleas!

Angelina is currently at Oakland University studying Accounting at the School of Business Administration in hopes of becoming a lawyer. She graduated from Eisenhower High School in 2024. As well as being a full-time student, she works for Young Rembrandts of Oakland and Macomb as an after-school teacher and is in the process of becoming an agent at Millennium Insurance Agency. As an intern at Soka Law Group, she will have the opportunity to gain first-hand legal experiences such as attending court hearings, communicating with clients, draft pleadings and attend client meetings. At Oakland University, she plans to establish the OU Pre-Law Association in order to provide other students with opportunities like hers. Her time at Soka Law Group as well as her other experiences will provide her with post-graduation knowledge early on and assist her in reaching her goal of becoming a lawyer.

Celebrating Independence Day with immense pride as my nephew and Godson, Kevin Soka takes a monumental step in his journey! Last week he was sworn in as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force, embracing a noble calling to serve and protect our great nation.

On this July 4th, let’s honor all the brave men and women who stand on the front lines, ensuring our freedom and safety. May God bless our troops and guide them in their mission. 🙏🇺🇸

Meet and welcome our summer intern at Soka Law Group, Lindsay Densmore!!

Lindsay is a third year law student at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. In 2022, she graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelors in Marketing. She is interested in Criminal and Family law. Last summer, she had an externship at the Attorney Grievance Commission and she is excited to intern at Soka Law this summer where she will be drafting pleadings, observing court hearings, attending criminal investigation meetings, attend client meetings, etc.
These experiences will prepare her to practice law after she graduates in May 2025!

Isabella graduated from Mercy High School in 2023. Currently, she is at Wayne State University studying at the Mike Ilitch School of Business with aspirations of becoming a lawyer. While being a full-time student, Isabella works as an Administrative Assistant for Northern Hotels Group. As an intern at Soka Law, she will be gaining legal experience such as drafting pleadings, attending court hearings, meeting with clients, answering client’s calls, etc. These experiences will prepare her for law school and help her achieve her goal of becoming a lawyer.
