Some people walked out of a residential treatment program twenty or thirty years ago and have never told a single soul what happened to them inside.
Not a spouse. Not a sibling. Not a therapist they have trusted for years.
If that is you, here is something worth sitting with: the silence was never a flaw in your character. These places were built on control. The adults you would have reported to answered to the same boss as the person you would have reported. You were a teenager, labeled before anyone heard a word you said. Of course you stayed quiet. Staying quiet was how you survived it.
Waiting years or decades to talk about it is not rare. It is one of the most common responses there is. And the thing you have carried alone almost certainly happened to others in the same hallways.
This piece does not ask you to do anything. It just meets you where you are.
