Partners Damien Weinstein and Brian Klein recently spent some time with Jonathan Sheppard talking about culture in growing firms. My view:

Building around culture is hard. But it’s worth it.

Because culture isn’t what you write down in a handbook or hang in a frame on the wall. It’s how your team makes decisions when you’re not in the room.

And anyone scaling a business knows this: you won’t always be in the room - and you shouldn’t always be in the room.

A strong culture gives you confidence when you’re on the move and relying on your team to carry things forward.

And the best part of a good culture? When it’s working, it becomes self-policing: the right people lean in, and the wrong people don’t last.

Financing is still tight, buyers and sellers remain cautious, and patience for drawn-out negotiations is shorter than ever. Deals don’t fall apart at closing, they fall apart much earlier, when gaps aren’t identified and addressed upfront.
