Tomorrow is Independence Day, and it’s also my first wedding anniversary with my beautiful wife, Laura. That isn't by accident. We chose the date last year as an act of joy, of defiance, and of freedom.
So, I’ve been thinking about freedom, but not the kind capitalism and democracy try to provide. I've been pondering the deeply personal, sometimes terrifying freedom that I get to witness and support in my work as a coach and mediator. The freedom of claiming the truth about who you are. The freedom to build a life that actually fits. The freedom to love openly and deeply.
A year ago tomorrow, my wife and I formalized a love that is more deep and true than either of our younger selves could have dared to dream of. We did so with joy and delight, surrounded by people we love. But it was our younger selves and their brave choices to step into hard conversations that gave us the freedom to find that path.
This brings me to the podcast conversation I had with Gwenm Carsley of the Skin and Soul Podcast, which was released last month. We dive into so much of that journey. We talk about coming out later in life, divorce, identity, grief, love, and what it means to choose authenticity even when the path is uncertain.
While you are going about your weekend, I hope you'll listen. If you are reading this, I imagine you are standing at a threshold of your own—whether it’s about your sexuality, your relationships, your purpose, or simply the life you’ve built. If you are, and if it resonates, I’d love to hear what stays with you.
