Children Deserve a Break During the Holidays.

Another holiday season is approaching fast. The goal for children is for them to have a wonderful holiday experience. Parents know that holidays are very stressful – and even more so if the parents are separated. The holidays cause even more stress for parents when the inevitable argument ensues over who gets the kids, when, what time and on and on. Even if the parents try to isolate the children from the arguments, the child know what is going on and the disagreements make it difficult for them.

Every holiday season, in December, family lawyers start getting the calls about disagreements over holiday placement. Even if we do work it out, everyone is mad. So, what can you do to make all this less stressful?

1. Look at your court ordered holiday schedule now. Make sure you understand it. Waiting until Dec. 23rd to find out there is a problem will not solve anything and will make matters worse.
2. If you have questions and have an attorney, communicate with the attorney now. If there is some issue, the attorney will have time to work it out with the other side.
3. If you do not have an attorney, reach out to the other parent now. Even if you and the other parent are barely talking, it will only get worse if you wait to the last minute.
4. If you have issues that cannot be resolved before the holidays, save them for after the holiday. Then after the holiday you can ask the court to address the issues so the same thing does not happen next year.
5. Children will be fine if their parents work things out! Children adjust much better than the parents. They let the harsh feelings go quicker. They want to love both parents. The holidays do not have to be perfect for the children. They do have to be cordial.

Wishing you and your families all the best in the coming Holiday!
