Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Teens are out of school, calendars fill with fun plans, and there are more cars on the road than almost any other time of year. That combination unfortunately brings a real human cost that plays out every single summer — one that most families don't think about until it's too late.

Stay alert out there this weekend.

A properly installed car seat can reduce infant and toddler death by up to 70%, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But only if the seat itself is still safe to use.

Habush Habush & Rottier attorney Tim Trecek spoke with FOX6 News Milwaukee about the Safe Seats Safe Kids campaign, including one danger most parents don't know to look for: expiration dates. Yes, car seats expire. And an expired seat can look completely fine while no longer offering the protection your child needs.

Check the embossed date on the bottom of your seat. If it's past its expiration — replace it.

On January, 2025, 5 year old Finn Katona was tragically run over and killed by a school bus, while transferring buses with his classmates. It was alleged that the unsafe transfer procedure used by Hamilton School District and Dairyland Bus Company ultimately led to his tragic death.

At a press conference this week, firm president, Tim Trecek, addressed the circumstances surrounding the case and settlement. Along with a confidential monetary settlement, Student Transportation of America (STA) agreed to create and execute additional training for all their school bus drivers across the country and make the training available (at STA's expense) to many other national school bus organizations. The training will potentially reach 130,000 school bus drivers across the country. The training will include all drivers being provided a “Finn's Rule” card, which has a picture of Finn Katona and sets forth safety reminders, dealing with bus danger zones and other bus driver safety requirements. The settlement and Finn's Rule will improve bus safety throughout the country and, hopefully, prevent another tragic death.
