A 32-year-old crew member aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas was urgently airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard after experiencing severe abdominal pain that required a higher level of medical care than was available onboard. The ship altered course toward Puerto Rico, where a Coast Guard helicopter successfully evacuated him approximately 58 miles offshore.

When a medical emergency happens at sea, every minute can matter. Cruise lines must have appropriate emergency procedures in place and respond promptly when passengers or crew members require medical attention beyond what can be provided onboard.

Severe weather can change a cruise itinerary in an instant — but passenger safety must always come first.

A powerful nor’easter recently forced Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas to remain in port overnight, while other ships faced delays and itinerary changes due to dangerous winds, flooding concerns, and unsafe port conditions.

Cruise lines have a responsibility to take reasonable precautions to protect their passengers, especially when severe weather or hazardous conditions threaten a voyage. That includes closely monitoring conditions, making appropriate operational decisions, communicating changes, and prioritizing safety over schedules.

Our maritime attorney, L. Alex Perez, was featured in the Miami Herald discussing the $100 million lawsuit filed on behalf of Survivor Greece contestant Stavros Floros, who suffered catastrophic injuries and lost his left leg after being struck by a boat while filming the reality competition.

“The prior filming in Miami, Florida is what enticed Stavros to participate,” Perez told the Miami Herald. “He wanted to win the luxury reward trip to Miami.”

Perez also addressed why the lawsuit was filed in Miami-Dade County, explaining that the production’s longstanding business and filming activities in Florida help establish jurisdiction in the state.

The lawsuit alleges that Floros was required to spearfish in heavily trafficked waters without adequate safety personnel, boats, spotters, or other protective measures. Following the incident, Floros was flown to Miami, where he spent 61 days hospitalized at Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital and underwent multiple operations.

A disturbing video aboard the Norwegian Getaway shows a passenger standing on a narrow exterior section of the ship near the bow before climbing over a balcony railing to return to his cabin. One wrong move could have resulted in a fatal fall.

Passengers have a responsibility to follow posted safety rules and remain within authorized areas. What was meant to be a joyful family celebration ended in tragedy after Minnesota pastor Steve Junker suffered a severe spinal cord injury and nearly drowned aboard the Sun Princess while celebrating his son’s wedding.

According to reports, Junker fell and was later found face down and unresponsive in a pool. He received medical care aboard the ship before being transported to a hospital in Italy and later to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Sadly, he died weeks later surrounded by his loved ones.

Our thoughts are with his family and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.

Our maritime attorney, Jason Margulies, was featured in AOL discussing what happens when a passenger dies aboard a cruise ship and the significant costs families may face when bringing a loved one home. ⚓

“Morgues are normally kept on a lower deck, away from food storage areas or passenger areas,” Margulies explained. “The standard morgue on a cruise ship can accommodate between three and six bodies in refrigerated storage areas.”

Margulies also emphasized the financial considerations families should be aware of, warning that repatriation is generally not covered by the cruise line and can be extremely costly without proper insurance.
