The work that could be done in a tenth of the time is being done by hand.

That gap between what AI can do and what institutions are actually allowing is where a massive amount of inefficiency lives right now. And it is not just public institutions. It is everywhere that caution has outpaced adoption.

An appellate brief used to cost $100,000 and take 60 hours to write.

That price tag was a weapon. The threat of a three year appeal costing the other side $100,000 was enough to force a settlement.

AI changed the math. What used to take 60 hours now takes a fraction of that. The savings go directly to the client.

The economics of litigation strategy are shifting in ways the profession has not fully caught up to yet.

Housekeepers on care.com are writing beautifully now. So is every job applicant.

Writing used to be the clearest signal that someone could think. A good writer was a good thinker was a good lawyer. That was the formula.

Now anyone can run a mediocre draft through Claude and get back something polished. Resumes. Briefs. Emails. Everything looks good.

Writing still matters. But as a hiring filter, it is done.

The University of Chicago banned computers and phones from law school classrooms to protect the learning process.

The instinct is right. The implementation is almost impossible.

AI is not a tab you can close. It is Alexa. It is Siri. It is the Google search result that populates before you finish typing. Telling a law student to turn off AI is like telling them to put down electricity and pick up chalk.

The next generation of lawyers needs to be trained differently. That conversation is just getting started.

There is some irony in that. Young associates used to hate that work. It was tedious. But it was also how you learned the case.

AI can write a perfect essay in seconds. If you cannot tell whether a student learned anything, you have already lost the classroom.

The University of Chicago just banned computers and phones from law school entirely.

Not just AI. Everything. And the reasoning is straightforward: remove the distraction and people actually pay attention. Someone who recently sat through a no-phone lecture said the difference was immediate and obvious.

For first year law students learning an entirely new way to think, that is not a punishment. That is the point.

The hardest part of complex litigation is not the law. It is finding the diamonds buried in thousands of pages of record.

Being good at anything is hard. The tools getting smarter does not change that. The sweat in law is reading cases, writing briefs, sitting with something difficult until it clicks. Feeding a case into AI and asking for a three sentence summary is not the same thing. Not even close.

The University of Chicago () is trying to change that. The top ranked law school in the country is taking responsibility for what legal education should actually look like.

The distinction they are drawing: no AI in the learning of what it means to be a lawyer. AI in everything else.

That line matters more than most people in the profession want to admit.
