There will inevitably be a few "let the kids be kids" comments made whenever I share Summer conversing about orthopedic cases with her dad over dinner, post about 30 books a day, share Cooper talking about rules of law with me, etc. Like I always say, do what's best for your family and we'll do what's best for ours! Who else has been told this (completely unsolicited btw) before?

It was prior to soccer starting back up and Marvin K. Smith was on call with multiple cases scheduled, so the kids and l spent the day out eating and running errands. All moms know that sometimes you just have to get out of the house and end the day with a treat. 🍔

Where did the time go? 🥹👩🏽‍⚕️

It’s been so special watching Summer’s interests grow from human body books and dinner conversations to observing surgery, attending orthopedic conferences, reading Marvin K. Smith’s old medical textbooks, reviewing anonymized imaging, overseeing her brother’s recovery (lol), and watching surgeries with Daddy, MD.

As my kids grew, the way we read naturally grew with them. The number became less important as the books became longer and more complex, they began learning to read themselves, and eventually, in Summer’s case, reading became something she chose to do independently. Thirty books a day was a tool I used to create consistent exposure to books and language and, hopefully, help build a culture in our home where reading was just part of everyday life. Years later, I get to see the fruit of that practice in two kids who love books and one who won’t stop reading on her own. And THIS was always the point. ❤️

I was right about Part A. I had my baby, my MBE score expired, and a few months later I had to sit for the entire bar exam again—this time with an almost-six-month-old at home. But honey that mom grit is UNMATCHED. I’m sharing this because goals aren’t always accomplished on the timeline you imagined, and a setback doesn’t change where you’re capable of ending up. Congratulations to everyone who passed the bar this season. And to everyone who didn’t: your story isn’t over. Trust me. 😉
