Your car still drives. The damage doesn't look too bad. The insurance company sends you a check for $1,500. Do you keep the money, or get the car fixed?

That's the "convenience" the insurance industry is selling: upload a few pictures, get an estimate in two days, and a check in your name a few days later. Nobody ever looks at the car.

Keep the money and you're walking into two big problems:

1. There is almost always more damage than the pictures show. One industry study found that once the body shop got into the car, the final bill ran 67% above the photo estimate on average. You're driving a damaged car, and you don't know how damaged.

2. A $1,500 estimate looks like a minor accident. So the insurance company uses it to deny your injury claim: "Nobody gets hurt in a wreck that small." But you are hurt. A real repair bill takes that argument away from them.

Simple lesson: get your car fixed. The extra cash feels good today, but it hands the insurance company an out on paying for the real repairs, and an argument that you weren't injured.

If you are involved in an accident with an Uber driver, Amazon delivery worker, or Door Dasher, who pays?

It's not a simple answer.

Most are classified as independent contractors, despite being under the control of these entities.

And, unless the worker has a particular endorsement on their auto policy, they may not have any coverage!

This video tries to clarify what is going on when an accident involves these companies. If you work for these companies or are out on the streets with them, you'll want to know if you are covered in the event of an accident.

My previous video was about why you should use your own car insurance after an accident. Arizona law protects you from raising your rates for making a claim that is not your fault.

That doesn't mean it will be easy.

Jennifer called me and advised her son had been in a car accident. That's scary and stressful enough.

She called her insurance. They said to call the agent.

Agent said to call claims.

Claims said to call the other car's insurance company.

Frustrating!

Then, she got in touch with our office. Because this topic was so recent, I asked her to share her experience and advice, now that she has gone through it.

It's as predictable as a sunrise.

I get a call from someone who was just in a car accident. They need to get their car fixed. They have collision coverage. But the person on the phone says "But I don't want to use my insurance!"

The concern: "I don't want it to raise my rates."
