♿ Could Accessibility Upgrades Lower Your Tax Bill?

Making your business more accessible may do more than support your customers—it could also qualify you for a valuable tax credit.

Eligible small businesses may be able to claim the Disabled Access Credit for certain expenses related to improving accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

A business may qualify if, in the prior tax year, it had:

💰 $1 million or less in gross receipts, OR
👥 30 or fewer full-time employees

The credit is generally 50% of eligible expenses over $250, up to $10,250.

Potentially eligible expenses may include:

Providing interpreters for individuals with hearing impairments

Providing readers for individuals with visual impairments

Acquiring or modifying equipment or devices

Other qualifying accessibility improvements

Tax rules can be complex, so make sure you understand the eligibility requirements before claiming the credit.

📚 Ready Your Books for Tax Season

One of the most common bookkeeping mistakes business owners make is mixing business and personal finances.

Addressing this before year-end can help:

✅ Simplify tax preparation
✅ Improve the accuracy of your financial records
✅ Reduce the risk of IRS questions
✅ Ensure you don’t overlook legitimate deductions

Business expenses generally must be “ordinary and necessary” to qualify for a tax deduction. Recording personal purchases as business expenses can overstate deductions, while paying legitimate business expenses with personal funds—and failing to record them—could mean missing valuable deductions.

Mixing transactions can also distort your financial statements, making it harder to measure profitability, manage cash flow and make informed business decisions.

For corporations and LLCs, keeping business and personal finances separate also helps reinforce the legal distinction between the business and its owners.

💰 Make the Most of Your HSA Tax Benefits

If you’re eligible to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA), now is a good time to review your contribution strategy. An HSA may help you reduce your 2026 taxes while building long-term financial security.

✨ Why HSAs can be valuable:

Contributions may be pretax or tax-deductible.

Investment earnings can grow tax-deferred.

Withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free.

Unused funds generally carry forward from year to year.

📊 2026 HSA Contribution Limits

Self-only coverage: Up to $4,400

Family coverage: Up to $8,750

Age 55+ catch-up: Additional $1,000

Eligibility generally requires coverage under a qualifying high-deductible health plan (HDHP), along with meeting other requirements.

🌱 Think Beyond Today’s Medical Expenses

If your financial situation allows, you may consider paying current qualified medical expenses out of pocket and leaving your HSA balance invested. Over time, that could help turn your HSA into another source of retirement savings.

After age 65, HSA withdrawals for nonmedical expenses generally aren't subject to the additional 20% penalty, although ordinary income tax may apply. Qualified medical expenses can continue to receive tax-free treatment.

📅 Don’t Wait

Take a few minutes to review your HSA contributions before year-end and consider whether you’re taking full advantage of the account’s tax benefits.

📞 Contact our office if you’d like help reviewing your options.

📈 4 Tax-Smart Investment Moves Before Year End

As 2026 comes to a close, a quick portfolio review could uncover opportunities to manage your tax bill.

💡 1. Harvest gains or losses
Use investment losses to offset gains—or consider realizing gains when appropriate.

⚠️ 2. Watch the wash sale rule
Selling at a loss and buying the same or substantially identical investment too soon can delay the tax benefit.

📅 3. Consider timing
If your income or tax bracket may change in 2027, the timing of an investment sale could matter.

❤️ 4. Donate appreciated investments
Donating long-term appreciated securities to charity may help you avoid capital gains tax while potentially providing a charitable deduction if you itemize.

📞 Before making year-end investment moves, talk with your tax advisor to coordinate your investment and tax strategy.

💰 Could Bad Debts Lower Your 2026 Taxes?

If customers haven’t paid what they owe your business, you may qualify for a bad debt deduction—but specific IRS rules apply.

✔️ The debt must generally be business-related and bona fide.
✔️ Accrual-basis businesses may qualify if the debt was previously included in income.
✔️ Cash-basis businesses generally can’t deduct unpaid invoices.
✔️ Document your collection efforts and keep supporting records.

📋 Have aging receivables? Review them before year-end and make sure your documentation is in order.

📞 Contact our office to discuss whether a bad debt deduction may apply to your business.

📋 Single? You Still Need an Estate Plan.

Think estate planning is only for married couples or parents? Think again.

If you’re single and don’t have children, an estate plan can help make sure your wishes are followed and important decisions stay in trusted hands.

Without a will, state intestacy laws generally determine who receives your assets. Depending on your circumstances, that could mean assets passing to parents, siblings, more distant relatives, or potentially the state if no eligible relatives can be found.

An estate plan can help you take control by addressing:

📌 Who receives your assets
A will and appropriate beneficiary designations can help direct where your assets go.

🏦 Who handles your finances
A financial power of attorney can name someone you trust to manage financial matters if you become unable to do so.

🏥 Who makes medical decisions
Health care documents can help ensure someone you trust can make decisions on your behalf if you can't.

💰 Potential estate taxes
If you have significant assets, trusts and other planning strategies may help minimize estate taxes.

Being single doesn't mean you don't need an estate plan. It means you may need to be especially intentional about who you want making decisions for you.

📞 Don't leave these decisions to state law. Contact our office to discuss how estate planning can fit into your overall financial and tax strategy.

💰 Need Funding for Your Business? Don't Choose the First Option You Find!

Whether you're dealing with a cash-flow crunch, planning an expansion, or investing in new equipment, the right financing can help your business move forward without putting unnecessary strain on your finances.

Here are 5 funding options worth considering:

🔹 Line of Credit
Flexible funds you can access when you need them.

🔹 Term Loan
A set amount repaid over time, often used for major business investments.

🔹 Commercial Mortgage
Financing designed for purchasing business property.

🔹 SBA Loans
Government-backed programs that may offer financing opportunities for qualifying businesses.

🔹 Equipment Leasing
Acquire equipment while preserving cash for other business needs.

💡 Bonus: Alternative financing, such as online lenders, equipment financing, and invoice factoring, may also be worth exploring.

And don't forget the tax implications. Certain loan interest and qualifying lease payments may be deductible, depending on your circumstances.

💰 A New Tax-Advantaged Savings Opportunity for Kids

Did you know there's a new way to help children build wealth for the future?

Section 530A Accounts, also known as Trump Accounts, became available on July 4, 2026. These accounts allow families to save up to $5,000 per year for eligible children under 18, with earnings growing tax-deferred.

Even better, some U.S. citizen children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, may qualify for a $1,000 government-funded contribution.

Before opening a 530A account, it's important to compare it with other savings options, such as a 529 education plan, to determine which best aligns with your family's financial goals.

Every family's situation is unique. If you'd like to understand how this new account fits into your overall financial strategy, we're here to help.

📞 Contact our office to discuss your options and make the most of every tax-advantaged opportunity.
