A little history ...

BEFORE IT WAS THE ABITA CAFE…

It was Eddie Escaig's Meat Market in the 1930's and 40's and continued under another owner till the late 50s-early 60s. We believe this photo to be from somewhere around 1950-60.

Oysters were shucked in an icehouse out back.

We’ve been told that back then, you could actually pick out your catfish while it was still swimming in a tank, and they’d fillet it for you right there. 🐟

Is that true?

We have absolutely no idea. 😂

But it sounds just believable enough that we’re choosing not to ruin a good story until somebody proves otherwise.

That’s what we love about this building.
Long before we were serving cathead biscuits, sweet cream pancakes and hand roasted coffee here, people were already walking through these doors for something good to eat.

Businesses changed. Owners changed. Generations changed.

But this little building has just kept on feeding people for over 100 years. ❤️
