🩺 What’s a HIPAA Release? And why does it matter?

It’s one of the most forgotten documents in estate planning - but it’s absolutely essential.

A HIPAA Release lets your chosen people access your medical info if you’re unable to speak for yourself. No document = no access, not even for your spouse or kids.

Why it matters:
✔️ Doctors can’t disclose anything without it (seriously, anything)
✔️ It allows informed decisions during emergencies
✔️ It supports your Power of Attorney and Living Will

No HIPAA = no info = no action.

If you want your loved ones empowered — not helpless — make sure this is in your estate plan.

As an estate planning attorney, CPA, and CFP®, one of the most common questions I hear is: "What exactly is a Power of Attorney - and do I really need one?"

The answer: YES.

A Power of Attorney gives someone you trust the legal authority to step in and manage things if you can’t - whether that’s paying bills, handling medical care, or making sure your finances stay on track.

Without one? Your loved ones may have to go to court just to help you.

I'm an estate planning attorney, CPA, and CFP® — and one of the most common questions I get is... 🔍 What exactly is a will?

A Last Will & Testament says:

- Who gets your stuff.
- Who handles your estate.
- Who steps in as guardian if you have minor kids.
- It goes through probate court and names someone to carry out your wishes.

👉 But here’s the thing: A will only takes effect after you die. It doesn’t help during your lifetime or if you become incapacitated. That’s why it’s just one part of a full estate plan.

A will is just one part of an estate plan.
➕ A will = who gets your stuff and who handles your estate
➕ An estate plan = covers your finances, medical choices, and your family’s stress level
If you’ve got loved ones, you need a plan - not just a document.
