Gray Ice Higdon joins the nation in observing Juneteenth—also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day. This landmark day commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and ensure that the last enslaved African Americans were finally freed.

While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed two and a half years prior, Juneteenth serves as a stark reminder that the proclamation of a law is only the first step; true justice relies on its systemic enforcement and protection.

As legal professionals, our calling is inherently bound to the pursuit of justice, equality, and the rule of law. Juneteenth is not only a celebration of Black freedom and resilience, but it is also a time for deep reflection on the work that remains.

Yesterday was a special day for our team.

We were honored to attend the Best Places to Work in Greater Louisville awards, where Gray Ice Higdon was recognized as the #4 Best Place to Work in our category. Later that evening, we traveled to Lexington to celebrate alongside organizations from across the Commonwealth at the Best Places to Work in Kentucky event.

This week’s spotlight is on Candee Niemeier, Litigation Assistant. When we asked Candee why she chose to join our team she said simply “It chose me.” She started with a litigation firm as a receptionist but quickly expanded her role as she learned more skills. She’s an integral part of our litigation team.

When she’s not working hard at our office, she’s likely in her kitchen making her famous salsa, Rice Krispies treats, fudge or deviled eggs - all staples of our office parties. She’s an avid U of L sports fan and enjoys local Mexican restaurants any night of the week.

Candee says she joined our team because she wanted to work in a firm that values its employees and cares about the community at large. We’re glad we found each other, Candee.

This week, we are spotlighting Christina Fanning. Christina is an integral part of the Gray Ice Higdon team, working in Accounts Payable and helping keep the firm running smoothly behind the scenes. She chose to join Gray Ice Higdon because of its strong reputation and commitment to work/life balance, something she truly values.

Outside of the office, Christina enjoys spending time in her flower beds and being with her husband and three children, staying involved in all of their activities. She’s happiest with a glass of sweet tea in hand and a baby to snuggle—two simple things that can instantly make her day.

When it comes to local favorites, Christina loves grabbing a meal at El Tarasco and saving The Capital Grille for special occasions. Looking ahead, she has a clear vision for retirement: relaxing somewhere with a beautiful ocean or lake view.
