On Wednesday, September 30, SJI student advocates Amanda Pepe, Alexandria Trejo, and Patricia Gonzalez delivered public comment at the LA28 Ad Hoc Committee hearing. They called on LA28 and City Council members to immediately release details about the Olympics Human Rights Grants Program and establish a clear deadline for the completion of the full Human Rights Plan. Doing so would give community organizations the time and certainty they need to effectively plan, develop, and implement human rights initiatives, including critical anti-trafficking programs.

Action alert! The DOJ has withheld over $80 million in funding for victim services for almost a full year. Over 100 victim service providers have had to either drastically reduce services or close their doors. If the DOJ doesn't award these funds by October 1st, only 95 DOJ funded service providers will be left with active grants.

Over 17,500 survivors are served by these grants. If only 95 providers are left, the majority of survivors will lose access to lifesaving services.

Help us demand the DOJ award these funds and prevent further delays. Survivors can't wait.

With slow progress on the Human Rights Grants program announced by LA28 this past June, SJI urges the Olympic Ad Hoc Committee and other officials to release further details as soon as possible. Putting necessary protections in place to prevent human trafficking requires sufficient time, planning, and funding for them to be effective.

SJI thanks LA28 for updating its website and publicly sharing additional information yesterday about the Human Rights Grants Program first discussed in June. We also appreciate LA28's continued recognition of human trafficking as a priority area within its Human Rights Strategy.

While yesterday's announcement is an important step forward, many key details remain forthcoming. With 2027 only a few months away, community organizations need timely information regarding eligibility, application timelines, funding levels, and program implementation so they can begin planning, building partnerships, and designing projects that will help prevent and address human rights risks ahead of the 2028 Games.

We look forward to continued transparency and collaboration as this important first-of-its-kind initiative moves forward.

LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover promised to release details for the proposed Community Grant program by the end of the summer — which is September 22nd. As Hoover himself claimed responsibility for the human rights plan for the Olympics, we're asking him, directly, to keep his promise.

Hoover on behalf of LA28 announced back in June that a Community Grant program will be launched to fund human rights work in Los Angeles, specifically mentioning the prevention of human trafficking in and around the Olympic Games. SJI has been working hard to address trafficking in major sporting events through public education, supply chain policies, and advocacy efforts.

It is crucial that LA28 puts out specific details of the Community Grant as soon as possible, so that human rights groups like SJI can start their necessary work. The Olympics are less than two years away—time is running out to prevent human trafficking and exploitation around the Games.
