We serve low-income residents of Los Angeles County in need of legal assistance in child custody and visitation, child support, parentage, restraining orders, divorce, property division, and spousal support. OUR MISSION

We ensure meaningful access to justice in the family law courts by providing free legal services, education, and advocacy for low-income residents of Los Angeles County. Our work empowers our clients to protect themselves and their children from domestic violence, poverty, housing insecurity, and other barriers to lasting stability.

The Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law (The Buhai Center) was founded in the early 1980s by the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Since its inception, the Buhai Center has served as a cornerstone of family law and domestic violence assistance for low-income Angelenos. To get help, you must make an appointment using our new client line (213) 388-7515, Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m.

For survivors of domestic violence, getting legal protection is often far more difficult than it should be.

A new LA Times investigation examines how L.A. County courts dismiss domestic violence restraining order requests at a higher rate than anywhere else in California and reveals just how many people are navigating the process without a lawyer.

At the Buhai Center, we see the real-world consequences of these challenges every day. We provide free family law legal services to survivors of domestic violence, helping them navigate a complex legal system and seek the protection they need. We see firsthand that family law legal aid can save lives. Yet because of limited resources, we have to turn away nearly 75% of qualified individuals who seek our help. With greater investment in legal aid, more people can have an attorney by their side when they need one most.

The Buhai Center is seeking applicants for the 2027 Skadden Fellowship and Equal Justice Works Fellowship who are interested in partnering with us to develop innovative projects that expand access to justice in the family law system.

We are especially interested in proposals focused on:
- Domestic violence advocacy, including restraining order representation
- Family law litigation before, during, or after dependency proceedings
- Complex property issues in dissolution matters
- Barriers to accessing the family law courts

All proposals must include a direct services component. We are looking for candidates with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law, excellent research and writing skills, and a strong academic record.
